Just One Thing: What a great Kentucky Derby!
I'm not really into horse racing though I do usually watch the Kentucky Derby, and it was a race for the ages this weekend with a 23-1 shot, Golden Tempo, coming from dead last to win by a neck. I mean, not only was Golden Tempo in last...he was last going into the final turn! The horse's trainer, Cherie DeVaux, becomes the first female trainer ever to win the Derby. The jockey, Jose Ortiz, won his first Derby on his 11th try, edging out his brother who was riding Renegade, a co-favorite at 5-1 odds. Brothers have never come in first and second in the Derby though there have been a few jockey brothers at top levels of horse racing.
Kentucky Derby 2026 results: Golden Tempo trainer with historic win
A LOT of F-bombs in this, but it's the owner of Renegade, the horse that came in second, comforting Irad Ortiz (the losing jockey) and telling him that if he's gonna lose it's great to lose to your brother...
As long as we're talking sports...
What a crazy Game 1 of the Avalanche/Wild Round 2 NHL Playoffs!
In the history of the NHL there have only been 4 playoff games with more than 15 goals scored (the number scored on Sunday night) and the most recent of those was 36 years ago: Team Records - Playoffs | NHL Records
Come join me and Jack Carr (and Brad Thor next month)
Only a few tickets left for the event with Jack at which I'll interview him about his latest book, The Fourth Option, which is NOT a continuation of the Terminal List series but rather an entirely new protagonist and style and probably the first in a new series even as the James Reece (Terminal List) series is not finished. Admission includes a signed copy of the book and a companion ticket which is less expensive may be purchased with a full ticket, but not without one. Companion ticket doesn't come with a book.
The Jack Carr event is Saturday, May 16th at 5 PM at the Douglas County Legacy Campus (the place I was talking about the other day that was originally built by the founder of Re/Max real estate) that's basically in between Lone Tree and Parker.
Next month I'll host Brad Thor for a similar event for his newest book.
Tickets for both available here: Featured Events | Douglas County Libraries

Roger Pielke Jr. is aSenior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and Professor Emeritus at CU Boulder. We'll talk about the great news that the most alarmist and ridiculous "possible" climate change scenario, which was never actually possible, has now been removed from the range of possible outcomes by the groups that decide these things. The newest "highest possible" is still basically impossible but you can bet that "scientists" and others will continue to use it as if it's as likely as any other outcome...because scaring people is where the money is.

Other Stuff
Spirit Airlines is now a ghost. I never flew Spirit Airlines. I know people loved to hate it but I don't have an opinion.
Interesting debate right now whether its collapse is the fault of Trump and the Iran war jacking up fuel prices or the fault of the Biden administration for blocking the proposed merger of Spirit and Jet Blue. It's probably some of each though I do wonder why Spirit seems not to have done any fuel price hedging.

The German chancellor made some unfortunate (and unfortunately correct) comments to a student group, and the comments got into the news and got to Trump who responded by ordering 5000 US troops withdrawn from Germany. (The comments were basically that despite the US having a military that is massively dominant over Iran's military, Iran is nevertheless "humiliating" the United States.) Frankly, I don't think the comments or the drawdown are a big deal though it would be fascinating to see Trump move the troops east, toward Ukraine and Russia, rather than bring them home or station them elsewhere in Europe (or anywhere else).

Reminder: The state legislature wants to steal all your remaining TABOR refunds and pretend that the money will go to education but most of it won't. It's unbelievable how these people will lie to you and I say that knowing that the lead sponsor on this bill is State Sen Jeff Bridges, whom I consider a friend. This is nonsense, and illegal, and just the latest example of Trump spouting off about everything and preventing the GOP from being able to campaign on the multiple positive achievements of the administration (which also has its share of negative actions but I'm talking about campaigning, not about my overall take on the success of Team Trump.)
Here's an example of something Republicans might want to campaign on but with all the constant chaos, almost nobody will even here about it, and I say this as someone who is against it...
While I oppose using taxpayer money to match 401(k) contributions and I’m against governmental direct involvement in retirement plans, politically this is the sort of thing that Republicans should be campaigning on but it’s impossible while Trump is creating so much noise and chaos that positive messages really can’t get through.
