A tragic incident unfolded in Hawaii when Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, a 47-year-old Navy sailor, died while rescuing two children from high surf at Waiapua'a Bay. The Kauai Police Department confirmed that Diaz, stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, entered the water on Saturday (November 23) to save the children, who were struggling against the strong currents.

Diaz's wife, Keyonna Fairley, shared with Hawaii News Now that the family was enjoying a regular weekend beach outing when their nine-year-old son, Kamden, was overpowered by a wave. Diaz acted quickly to rescue him, urging his son to swim to safety. "I want you to go. I want you to swim. Don’t stop. You got this. Don’t give up. I love you," Diaz reportedly told his son. Despite his efforts, Diaz encountered trouble and drowned before emergency responders could reach him.

The Ocean Safety Bureau and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department pulled Diaz from the water and transported him to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Kauai Police Department noted that foul play is not suspected, and an autopsy is pending.

Diaz, originally from Florida, enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and had served at various duty stations, including the USS Ross and Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia. He was awarded several commendations during his service, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Military Times noted that Diaz had only recently reported to the Pacific Missile Range Facility in October.

Captain Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, expressed his condolences, stating, "We are heartbroken by the passing of our shipmate and friend."

Diaz leaves behind his partner of 18 years, Keyonna Fairley, their three young children, two older children, and a grandchild. His family is now preparing for his funeral, remembering him as a devoted family man who cherished spending time with his loved ones.
