Tues Blogcast: Canada hikes electricity price; Falling in love; Stupid laws

Just One Thing: When will Trump cave on trade wars?

You know that I sold a decent percentage of my holdings in stocks about a month ago when it became 100% clear to me (it was already 83% clear) that President Trump's interest in tariffs was NOT exclusively, not even primarily, as leverage to get other countries to lower their trade barriers. It's a cover story. He likes tariffs because he equates trade with being ripped off (which is ridiculous) and, I suspect, I likes the ability to impose a massive tax hike without admitting that's what he's doing. Wish I'd sold even more aggressively, of course, but at least I sold some. In the past few weeks, the S&P is down about 8% and Nasdaq down about 13%. At some point, Trump voters will lose patience because the economy was supposed to be his strong suit.

And do you think a Republican will win a close race in Michigan if this doesn't stop?

I think tariffs were as much a catalyst for an overdue sell-off as they were a cause for a sell-off, but they are both. Tariffs will reduce the profits and value of far more companies than they will help. That said, Charlie definitely has a point that a bigger short-term issue for GOP is the reduction in federal spending that I hope we continue to see. Economist Brian Wesbury attributes nearly have of recent GDP growth to gov't spending, which is the least efficient spending. Withdrawing that spending will put short-term downward pressure on consumer spending and probably on stocks but in the long run will add to the productivity of the economy and be a significant net gain for the nation fiscally and in terms of getting government off our backs.
