UPDATE: Two people were killed in a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee just before noon on Thursday (April 17). FSU Chief of Police Jason Trumbower said that five others were taken to the hospital along with the suspected shooter. The two deceased victims were not students at the university.

Leon County Sheriff Walter A. McNeil identified the suspected gunman as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner. McNeil said that Ikner was the son of a current Leon County sheriff's deputy and had access to her guns.

"This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever phantom from a law enforcement perspective," McNeil said. "But I will tell you this, we will make sure that we do everything we can to prosecute and make sure that we send a message to folks that this will never be tolerated here in Leon County, and I dare say, across this state and across this nation."

An active shooter situation has been reported at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee on Thursday (April 17). The university issued an emergency alert, urging students, faculty, and staff to seek shelter immediately. The incident is occurred near the Student Union on the main campus.

The university posted on X, advising everyone on campus to stay indoors and await further instructions.

"Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures," the school wrote.

Police are on the scene, and several nearby schools and daycares were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Those lockdowns have since been lifted.

According to NBC News, six people were shot and taken to the hospital. One person is in critical condition, while the other five are in serious condition a spokesperson for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said. A law enforcement source told the outlet that at least one person has died.

CNN is reporting that a suspect is in custody. Police recovered a handgun from the suspect when they were arrested. A shotgun was recovered at the Student Union and police found another gun in the suspect's car.

WFTS reporter Forrest Saunders shared video on X showing officers bringing shackles to an ambulance where a patient was being treated.

Cellphone videos shared on social media show people running away from the campus. Witnesses have taken to social media to share their experiences, with one person writing, "We were just evacuated by police and are safe. Sending fervent prayers to all impacted."

As of 3:30 p.m., students were allowed to return to their dorms, but were asked to stay away from the "Student Union and surrounding areas" as the police continue to investigate the shooting.

Officials have canceled all classes through Friday.
