Just One Thing: Trade Wars

I'll have a lot more to say on this but will start with three tweets, two by me and then the first in a thread by Scott Lincicome. (You should read all 5 tweets in the thread.)

Other Stuff

I'll start with an unimportant note: I mentioned last week that my kid and I saw "Presence" and it was one of the worst, most pointless and boring movies I'd ever seen. Last night we went to see "Companion". While I didn't enjoy $22.50 a person for IMAX, the movie was thoroughly entertaining and a lot of fun, though it definitely deserves it's R rating. Unlike with "Presence" which got good reviews from critics but is actually terrible, this movie deserves its excellent reviews. I gave it 4.25 out of 5 stars. My kid gave it 4 out of 5. And it's probably worth the few extra bucks to see on IMAX even though it doesn't have a lot of special effects...especially if you can find an early show and save a little.

More on trade: I'm frustrated as I write this on Sunday evening after spending the better part of an hour in conversation/debate with people on Twitter. Even people who are fairly smart and good at business are repeating Trumpy claims about tariffs and trade that are not true, have never been true, and are very unlikely to ever be true. I very very much hope I'm wrong but this country could be in for a LOT of economic pain if Trump doesn't back down...which is not his style. I note that there is a very different conversation to be had about an enemy/competitor like China than an ally like Canada, Japan, and, yes, Mexico.

I've long said that trade is Trump's worst policy area...and it is. But I also want to be sure to note some things he and his team are getting done that are good, or even excellent. Here are a few just in recent days:
