Weds Blogcast: The election is over; Other random stuff

I'm going to keep today's blogcast short so I can spend a lot of time preparing the show and reading everything I need to read to talk about things beyond just the presidential election.

In a truly historic political comeback, Donald Trump will become only the second person in American history to win two non-consecutive presidential terms. Most or all of the swing states moved slightly but uniformly toward Trump giving him not only the first Republican win of the popular vote since 1988 but what may also turn into a large majority in the Electoral College. Republicans retook the Senate though it doesn’t look like as big a majority as it seemed last night as late-counted votes in blue states put Dems back in the lead there. The House is still up in the air but it appears the GOP might hold on to the slightest of leads. If so, Republicans will have full control of the federal government for two years. Let’s see what they do with it.

Political advertising

I spoke with two friends just before the election and they both said that the Trump campaign's emphasis on opposing transgender biological males who identify as females competing against girls/women in sports wasn't important. I told them I thought they were wrong and this is a serious lightning rod issue. This morning on MSNBC, Morning Joe and others talked about ads like this as some of the most effective ads of the campaign.

Markets:

At least pre-market, the stock market LOVES a Trump victory. I think that is correct as long as Trump doesn't go crazy with tariffs.

Also, Bitcoin and Tesla are up big and "renewable" stocks such as suppliers of solar power and wind systems are getting crushed. That makes me happy.because the message isn't really "solar power sucks" (even though it kinda does) but rather "we're going to stop incinerating taxpayer money on a liberal fetish."

DJT stock is up, unsurprisingly. (That's the company that holds Trump's "Truth Social" social media platform.) Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (DJT) Stock Price, News, Quote & History - Yahoo Finance

The stock would need to end the week below 20 or above 58 for the people who were buying "straddles" in the option market to make money. As I write this on Wednesday morning, it hadn't moved as much as the market had anticipated but it's still early. (At 5:20 AM the stock is trading just below $47.
