Just One Thing: Framing Tim Walz, Chapter 2

There will be many lines of attack against Kamala Harris’s new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, but I think two will dominate. First, he has repeatedly called himself a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom which Americans understand to be our war in Afghanistan in retaliation for the 9/11 attacks, but Walz never deployed to that part of the world. Apparently he may claim that his deployment to Italy is what he meant, but that’s some weak sauce. And Republicans will remember how much John Kerry’s exaggeration of his military service hurt his presidential campaign. Overall, however, I think this line of attack won't work and, more importantly, is a distraction from more important lines of argument such as on economic policy. Second, he let Minneapolis burn rather than send in the National Guard during the George Floyd riots. As JD Vance and others have noted, Walz let goons commit crimes and if they got arrested Kamala Harris bailed them out.
