Weds Blogcast: Mandy & Rep Jim Banks @ RNC; Ammo vending machines

Just One Thing: Secret Service failure worsens as more information comes out

The degree of failure by the Secret Service that allowed a would-be assassin to nearly kill former and likely future president Donald Trump only becomes more infuriating with more information. We learned in the past day or so that local law enforcement had SWAT officers INSIDE the building but didn’t go on the roof. We’re told that they thought the modest pitch of the roof made it unsafe. Give me a break. By the way, it appears that the roof where there was counter-snipers placed had a steeper slope than the roof the would-be assassin was on. AND the Service was aware of a potential effort by Iran to kill President Trump, and even with THAT information they didn’t secure a building just 140 yards away with a direct line of sight? It’s incredible that the head of the Secret Service and the Homeland Security Secretary still have jobs. They, and the people in charge of site security need to be fired yesterday.

I wish that far fewer people's gut reaction had been "I wish he hadn't missed." No matter what you think of a politician, wanting him or her to be killed is unacceptable. And, at the risk of making a practical point out of a moral question, don't forget that if the pol you dislike is killed, it becomes MUCH more likely that a pol you like will be targeted. We must not turn into such a nation. One more practical point: To all those folks on the left who daydreamed that the shooter hadn't missed, would you really want to "awaken the sleeping giant" of the millions of Trump supporters who, unlike Biden supporters, own firearms and know how to use them? Seriously, while the moral question is far more important than the practical points, everything about wishing that the shooter had succeeded is wrong and stupid.

I do believe this guy when he says he realizes he made a massive mistake and I applaud Jack Black for his action in response. I don't think it need terminate their partnership forever, but a pause as a form of penalty is appropriate. (FWIW, I don't know anything about their "comedy rock" and don't care although I have found Jack Black to be funny sometimes.)

It’s a small story but let me make a comparison: When Giuliani was mayor of NY before he became brain damaged, he pushed for police to enforce small rules in the belief that reducing low-level crime would reduce high-level crime. It seemed to work though it’s worth noting that crime levels dropped elsewhere as well so it’s not entirely clear. Anyway, when the entertainment industry, abetted by left-leaning media, tolerate people saying really horrible stuff not just about Trump but about anybody who likes Trump, people become conditioned to think it’s OK to say anything. So this guy did. And now he’s paying the price. Yes, it’s his fault, but the world he inhabits surely made it easier.

UPDATE: If you have tickets to see Ingrid Andress at Globe Hall in Denver next Wednesday:: Andress Denver concert canceled following MLB performance | News | denvergazette.com

Yesterday we played the audio of this young woman, Ingrid Andress, butchering the National Anthem and after looking at the video again (during yesterday's show) I said on the air -- in response to a listener who raised the suggestion -- that Ms Andress looked drunk. Her other music (and Grammy nominations) show some talent and I wish her well. Also, while I don't share the all-too-predictable utterances by some that she planned this so she would "go viral", I think she's just a person with a problem...who did go viral. Actually, I hope it helps her become more well known to new people who might like her music and might take inspiration for her taking responsibility and getting help.

A listener emailed to say he supports tariffs to boost American businesses. I sent a long note back explaining why tariffs are terrible policy, a fact which is not controversial among economists. Tariffs impose massive costs on Americans, lower GDP, and kill jobs. Kinda like any other big tax increase does.
