Just One Thing: "Christians" vs IVF is bad news for GOP
More interesting than the Supreme Court’s abortion pill ruling yesterday, which was about the standing of the plaintiffs rather than the merits of the argument, was the vote by the Southern Baptist Convention to oppose in vitro fertilization or IVF if it would result in the destruction of fertilized eggs. It’s not on the surface an overt opposition to IVF as some have stated but it may function that way because the only likely alternative is to get others to adopt embryos that would otherwise be discarded and I don’t see a lot of that happening. With the influential Heritage Foundation also making anti-IVF noises, you may soon hear a small but loud push from the Christian right to stop or aggressively regulate IVF. That’s the LAST thing the GOP needs going into the 2024 elections. If there are independent women who are pro-choice but can't stand Biden and are thinking about voting Republican this time around, a big media blast by Dems that the GOP is going after IVF will keep those people in the Dem camp, or at least not voting for Republicans. These pro-life folks are gonna push way too far and get people elected who will do a lot of stuff that they won't like.

Biden signs security agreement with Ukraine. I support supporting Ukraine. Do we need to go this far? That's a harder question; this does sound a lot like the road to "nation building" which I don't think we should be doing even though I think the likely outcome in Ukraine is far better than in Afghanistan. Two key points: the agreement does NOT commit the US to send American personnel into Ukraine. And, this is not a treaty because it's not Senate-approved which means that any future president (e.g. Donald Trump in 7 months, perhaps) can simply say, "Sorry, we're out". Well, if it's Trump he won't say sorry, just we're out.
