Weds Blogcast: Wolverine comeback?; new Tom Clancy novel; Your AI friend

Summer Book Events!

This summer, I’ll be hosting some big events with top thriller authors including Jack Carr and Brad Thor. More info here: Featured Events | Douglas County Libraries (dcl.org)

Dates:

  • Jack Carr: Friday, June 21
  • Daniel Silva: Thursday, July 18
  • Brad Thor: Wednesday, July 24

I'm not yet sure whether I'm hosting Daniel Silva. (But if you love thrillers you should go to all of them no matter who's hosting.) Should find out soon. Buy tickets for these events before they sell out!

Thanks very much to these authors, their publishers, and the Douglas County Public Libraries for asking me to participate. Truly one of the highlights of my year and of my job.

It's a brave new (AI) world

Fascinating, full of promise, and a little terrifying

Just One Thing: Bringing back the wolverine

Many folks think that the forced rapid reintroduction of wolves into Colorado was ill-conceived and for ranchers and their livestock it’s not going great. Nevertheless, a new law with bipartisan support authorizes the Parks and Wildlife department to reintroduce wolverines to the state. Wolverines are not even slightly related to wolves. They’re large scavengers in the weasel family and in the few places where they still exist in North America, they very rarely attack livestock. Unlike the ridiculous way wolves were forced into the state much faster than their normal migration would already have brought them, the new law does NOT have a deadline to bring the wolverines. It also will require federal review of the plan. There hasn’t been a wolverine that’s called Colorado home for more than 100 years. I don’t mind trying to change that.

Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson are the authors of the new "Tom Clancy" novel, "Act of Defiance", that is VERY much in the style of The Hunt for Red October, even as far as the Russian captain of the Red October submarine from that first Clancy novel showing up as a character in this one. It's a lot of fun, though I'd note again that it's VERY Clancy in style so you'll need to enjoy a lot of technical detail about military machinery, weapons, etc. I do enjoy that stuff and thoroughly enjoyed the book.

It's true that China poses particular non-trade issues but these tariffs are nuts and, as a general rule, there is no dumber economic policy in our modern interconnected world than tariffs which are simply taxes paid BY AMERICANS designed to protect American businesses which aren't competitive enough and which deprive consumers of choices they might prefer.

The worst Supreme Court decision of my lifetime remains, in my opinion, Kelo v New London. In that case, the Court rule 5-4 that a government can take someone's property (and pay them for it) if the proposed use has a "public benefit" even though the original conception of that use of the power of eminent domain was if the property would be put to "public use", such as a road. This particular case seems much closer to me to the wrong "public benefit" standard than a "public use" standard though it's a bit of a closer call than the Kelo situation was.
