Tues Blogcast: Trump's new stock; Construction defects; Bridge hit by ship

Videos and links of the unbelievable collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore after a support pillar was struck by a container ship are at the end of this blog

One theory I've heard this morning is that the ship lost the ability to steer. There is zero evidence that this was an attack or otherwise intentional.

Just One Thing: You can buy and sell Donald J Trump (or at least a stock with his initials)

After a couple of years of delays and uncertainty, yesterday Donald Trump’s social media company was finally merged into a publicly traded entity called Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC) and as of today it will trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol DJT. Before the transaction closed yesterday, DWAC stock exploded by 35%, closing at about $50 a share; In January it was $17. As of Tuesday morning, it's trading around $55 in "premarket" trading. Clearly lots of Trump supporters want to own a piece either because they think it’ll be profitable or because they want to show support for their man. The latter is not really a financial motivation and those folks may never sell. They'll hold on to the stock the way some people hold on to an old campaign button or poster or t-shirt. (I object to thinking about stocks that way, but you do you, as they say.) But for those who expect the investment to be a winner, I’m skeptical. I don’t mean DJT can’t go higher in the short run but I simply don’t see Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform, justifying a valuation of $1 billion, not to mention it’s current valuation over $6 billion.

State Sen Rachel Zenzinger is a Democrat who represents Senate District 19, northeastern Jefferson County. Part of the reason that there are so few condos available to purchase in Colorado is that, despite some recent reform, we have construction defect laws in this state that make it far too easy to sue a builder or developer and make it too expensive and risky for those folks to build reasonably priced homes that can be a young adult or young couple’s first foray into home ownership. Surprisingly, given the Democratic domination of our state government, there is an effort afoot to reduce those costs and risks because Colorado desperately needs more moderately priced housing. Rachel is leading the charge. We'll discuss the bill and how she's working to get just enough Dem support to get past the nanny-staters and those owned by the trial lawyers.

Other Stuff

A fascinating and important article, especially the stuff about how, as a nation, we need to do much more to help people prepare financially for retirement: Larry Fink’s 2024 Annual Chairman’s Letter to Investors | BlackRock

And, yes, I realize some of this can be seen as self-serving by the guy who runs one of the biggest, or maybe THE biggest, retirement account investing firm in the world. But it doesn't mean he's wrong.

The section about young people not having hope ties in well to the part of our conversation yesterday regarding polling showing that Americans over 60 are some of the happiest in the world but Americans under 30 rank 62nd in the world which would put them far below most other developed nations in self-described "overall well-being."
