One more thing: Wendy's says "Never Mind"

Well, that didn't take long. Barely a day after Wendy’s announced in an earnings call that they would roll out what they called dynamic pricing, which meant to most people a pilot program to slightly raise prices during the lunch and dinner busy periods for fast-food restaurants, the company, after a massive outraged outcry from the public, announced that they do not plan to do so. Of course that doesn’t mean they didn’t plan to do so before, and I suspect they did. As an econ guy, I think they should try. In particular, if I owned a fast-food place I would try to raise prices during busy periods by the most I could without most consumers noticing. Uber does this daily, airlines have higher fares over holidays, and so on. Wendys should try again…quietly.

Today's Guests

Ryan Bourne is the R Evan Scharf Chair for the Public Understanding of Economics at the Cato Institute. We're going to discuss "surge pricing" such as the kind that Uber does and airlines do (why flights are more expensive over Thanksgiving than a week later, for example), and that Wendy was probably going to try just before getting scared into saying they weren't.
