Dragon and Ross get bit

On Sunday, at the invitation of a friend who is involved with the sport of the kind of dog training in which dogs, often Belgian Malinois, learn to attack people and guard people and things, Producer Dragon and I met us with my friend and an expert trainer friend of his to experience the role of "decoy" in the training. These dogs are not heavy but they're very strong and for them the biting and shaking is the most fun game in the world. You can imagine how it would be very painful and terrifying if you were on the business end of a police dog doing this stuff. Also, the training for these competition dogs is more intense than for police dogs and the best dogs become competition dogs, not police dogs.

Just One Thing: Haley loses to Trump by a (yuge but less than expected) 20 points in her home state

Nikki Haley lost the South Carolina GOP primary by a smaller margin than expected but she still lost by 20 points in a state where was governor and spent a LOT of time and money campaigning. She says she’s staying in the race. I expect she’ll stay in until donors stop funding her, hoping that a Trump conviction in a federal trial or some other unexpected news will render him unable to be nominated. I think the 5% betting odds for Haley to be the nominee are much too high. Haley won among moderates and narrowly among college grades. But Trump beat Haley in every age group, among men and women, and across almost all incomes. And he won among people who care most about the economy and immigration, the two issues Americans care about most. I prefer Haley, but her chances are NOT improving.

SUNDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Koch network halts funding Haley's campaign after South Carolina loss to Trump (axios.com)

I also note that this whole election is extremely depressing. Lots of people like Nikki Haley but few love her. A fair number of Republicans (but not a majority) love Trump but few like him. And almost nobody loves or likes Joe Biden. Within the GOP primary, most votes for Haley are really votes against Trump, and many (perhaps most) votes for Trump are votes against Biden. And almost every vote for Biden will be a vote against Trump if Trump is the nominee, which is why it's so much more likely that Haley would beat Biden than that Trump would, but Republicans are not abandoning a man they believe to be -- even if far from without flaw or sin -- significantly a victim of a politicized justice system.

Alex Bradley is a Ph.D. student researcher at CU Boulder and CIRES (pronounced like “series”). We'll discuss his new research that shows significantly worse air pollution in the parts of Denver in which high percentages of the population are "black and brown" people. It's being called "air pollution inequality". And for the record, I believe the findings. But the economic questions may not be what the policy makers want us to think. For the record, I'm not having Alex on for a policy discussion...he's a science researcher and I'm not going to ask him the questions I might ask a politician or bureaucrat.

Since I read my first "The Gray Man" novel years ago, I've believed Mark Greaney to write some of the most thrilling thrillers you'll ever find. Mark's new book, "The Chaos Agent", reminds me that I still think so.

The third time's a charm for Colorado State Senator Mark Baisley. I've had Mark on in prior years to talk about bills he sponsored that would relieve owners of rural and mountain land of liability when hikers and bikers and other outdoor recreation-seekers got hurt on that land. Trial lawyers killed the bill in prior years but this time a bill with a slightly different approach passed the legislature and is going to the governor for his signature.

Also, and at least as important, a story I just saw on Sunday when doing homework for the show, in which Sen Baisley's name appears as part of an interesting debate: Colorado Democrats delay vote on child sex abuse constitutional amendment amid new opposition (msn.com)

You don't often see a sponsor of a bill change his/her mind enough to vote against it (but also not remove his name from it.)

This is another interesting public policy debate. I suspect a lot of my more conservative listeners/readers won't like the change, and of course the story that the article starts with biases the mindset against even considering the upsides. But there are upsides. The question is whether the left has, as they often do, gone too far in "criminal justice reform." You make up your own mind...it's a long article but worth reading in its entirety.

The "experts" in this study say they believe COVID did not start in the Wuhan lab. I think the proper reaction is to mistrust everything that comes from this organization (which I've never heard of before.)

First, the result is ridiculous (as far as suggesting that a big % of “experts” think COVID started outside the lab.)

Second, who actually responded to this? The small number of responses makes me think it was a self-selected group that for some reason wanted to push the less likely answer (maybe for political or self-serving reasons.)

Third, check out (p 49) that 1/3 of respondents claimed to be familiar with a study that didn’t exist. Study organizers said it “was a fake publication to check for respondent truthfulness/ competence/attention.”
