Just One Thing: Arizona GOP gone haywire

One of the most politically dysfunctional states, especially on the GOP side, is Arizona. And it just got crazier. The Trump sycophant TV news anchor turned losing political candidate Kari Lake released an audio clip that made it sound like the head of the state GOP was offering her a bribe to get out of the Senate race. He said the recording, which Lake made secretly while standing in her own living room, was deceptively edited, which seems true, and he wouldn’t step down and then Lake threatened to release more damning audio. Jeff DeWit, having had lots of personal private conversations with Lake as friends, or so he thought, apparently has a skeleton or two that he doesn’t want known and now has to fear that Lake recorded everything so he has resigned. Anyone want to be Kari Lake’s friend now?

That said, politics is the art of the possible so we should see all the details of the proposal before passing judgment. Finally, I think there will be plenty of House Republicans and maybe a good number of Senate Republicans who will not go along with any deal, figuring 1) why give Biden a win just before an election? and 2) A better deal can be had when Trump wins. Both of those are questionable, though. First, protecting the nation should be a top priority and I think that even passing something will leave the vast majority of Americans believing it happened in spite of Biden rather than because of him. Second, if Biden wins in November, his incentive to do anything goes away. Third, if Trump wins in November, Dems will have incentive to try to stop Trump from "getting a win" especially with a more aggressively anti-immigration (or anti-illegal immigration) bill and if the GOP does badly in congressional races, they may well be able to do so with a Senate filibuster (and they might also control the House, though I'm not predicting that at this point.)
