Just One Thing: Federal judge rules that restricting handgun purchases to 21-and-over is unconstitutional

Even with our current Supreme Court, I would not be surprised to see this overturned:

Young adults can't be prohibited from buying handguns, judge rules (axios.com)

Judge rules 18-to-20-year-olds can't be barred from buying handguns (msn.com)

The Gun Control Act of 1968 set the federal age to buy a handgun at 21. Is that long enough for the Supreme Court to say it has enough historical precedent to remain in place?

Given what Justice Alito said when the Bruen ruling was issued, even though he's usually the far-right wing in opinions on topics like these, I suspect even he would vote to overturn this ruling. That, by the way, would add a little confusion, not a little clarity, to Second Amendment law, I suspect. From Alito (via the Washington Post): “Our decision, as noted, does not expand the categories of people who may lawfully possess a gun, and federal law generally forbids the possession of a handgun by a person who is under the age of 18 … and bars the sale of a handgun to anyone under the age of 21.”

Today's Guests

Holy cow, what a pair of guests today...

Doomberg is a pseudonym for a team of folks whose primary business prior to their Doomberg venture becoming so wildly successful was as energy consultants. They're clear thinkers, data driven, not motivated by partisanship, and simply the best thinkers about the intersection of energy, politics, and (in the sense of good government versus bad government) morality that you'll find anywhere. Their Substack, which I do subscribe to, is not inexpensive but it's worth every penny. Today we're going to talk about the stupidity of countries pushing to electrify everything, especially in the absence of robust nuclear energy programs, and we'll talk about why we seem to be ruled by morons.

Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL sniper who served as an enlisted man and then an officer and leader. As a child he wanted to achieve two things: to be a SEAL and to be a successful thriller writer. He's achieved both. Remarkable. Jack is a very interesting, philosophical, and thoughtful guy...and a REAL badass. I'm proud to have been a supporter of his since before his first book, The Terminal List, which was recently released as a multi-part series on Amazon Prime starring Chris Pratt. (If you watch carefully, you'll see Jack briefly in one scene. Here's a hint: it doesn't work out all that well for him.)

Jack's newest book, his sixth, is "Only The Dead." It's a remarkable book with a great plot, intense action, and intense introspective psychology by the main character, James Reece.

For a LOT more conversation with Jack Carr (and me), please join us next Thursday, May 18 at The Tattered Cover on Colfax for a special event with Jack. Last I checked there were just a few tickets left that include a signed book, and a few more that don't: Jack Carr Presents ONLY THE DEAD at Tattered Cover Colfax | Tattered Cover Book Store

When's the last time there's been a more feckless and incompetent cabinet secretary than Alejandro Mayorkas? I mentioned on the show today that Border Patrol plans to release some (theoretically vetted for security risks) illegals into the interior of the country without enrolling them in a program that allows us to at least attempt to track them and make sure they show up at a future immigration hearing. Late Thursday, a judge put a pause on that policy just as Title 42 expired.

Meanwhile, here's what Mayorkas said, per the Washington Post: “We prepared for this moment for almost two years, and our plan will deliver results. It will take time for those results to be fully realized. And it is essential that we all take this into account.” Wait a minute...which is it? We prepared for two years or it will take time for the results to be realized? These two things basically can't both be true. This guy has to go.

First, some serious radio broadcasting nerdiness, thanks to listener Greg. One of our iHeart engineers tells me that our main broadcast tower in the Denver area is very much like this.
