A PHYSICIANS GROUP FILES A GRIEVANCE OVER RACE BASED PROGRAMS And specifically at the University of Connecticut where they advertise a medical externship as a "pipeline for students of color". I've got Dr. Kurt Miceli on at 2:30 to talk about the complaint filed by the group he's with Do No Harm, which you can read here. Diversity as a primary goal is not ideal, especially in medicine. I want a great doctor of any color, not a doctor of color who may or may or may not be great.
COLORADO WANTS MORE MONEY And progressives will be running yet another ballot measure to go away from our truly fair flat income tax system (although no income tax is a far better system) so they can "tax the rich" to pay for all the cool programs we've already been taxed to death over. Here is a good editorial on it, which clearly lays out how damaging this will be for our business climate. Here's another story that breaks down exactly what this would mean for tax bills. Of course they are putting a tiny tax decrease in this thing to bribe people at the lower end of the spectrum who already pay way less in taxes now. My argument against this is simply they have enough of our money, they need to do a better job spending it efficiently.
CAN WE TALK FIRST JOBS FOR A MINUTE? This is a good column about first jobs. First jobs are rarely your REAL job, they are entry level positions that teach you about showing up on time, paying attention, doing a job and getting a paycheck. I'd love to know what your first job was and how much you made.
WHEN HGTV LEAVES TOWN This is a column about something I've been wondering about for a couple of years now. After Home Town Takeover came to Fort Morgan to doll the place up, what happened? That was two years ago and according to this column the answer is not much. It seems having a tv show focus on you has limited returns but this creates a bigger question, and that is what can small towns do to survive? I have ideas.
DURANGO IS A HOTBED OF RACISM If you listen to the school board that is. A couple of years ago the board decided that Durango, which has a population that is overwhelmingly white, is practically the headquarters of the KKK. They decided to pass a resolution declaring how racist everyone in the district is (not them, they are the RIGHT kind of whites) and spend gobs of money forcing district employees to sit through DEI training so they all understood how racist they are. This as test scores for students have been in steady decline since 2010. Read more here, but this is what happens when politics is more important than learning. Just for fun, here is the demographic breakdown of Durango:
White (Non‑Hispanic): 78.1% (~15,000 people)
American Indian & Alaska Native (Non‑Hispanic): 7.21% (~1,390 people)
White (Hispanic): 4.07% (~783 people)
Two or More Races (Non‑Hispanic): 2.85%
Two Races Including Other (Hispanic): 2.79%
I didn't know White (Hispanic) was a thing but I guess after they labeled George Zimmerman a white hispanic it is. CMAS scores show 50% of students can't read on grade level and 56% can't do math. It's time for a new board in Durango.
HOW CAN SCHOOL RATINGS GO UP IF KIDS CAN READ OR DO MATH? I'll admit I'm not fully up to speed on the criteria to measure school and district performance, but when I saw this story about Denver Public Schools rating going UP, when they are barely back to where they were before the pandemic I am confused. Can anyone explain this to me?
THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE SHARING ABOUT BAD COPS Remember that wackadoodle park ranger who stabbed himself and lied and said it was some dude? Apparently he had already flamed out of one police force for being bad at his job but was able to get hired a park ranger. It seems to me that we need to sharing more info about folks who do not need to be in any sort of law enforcement.
COULD AN AIDS DRUG HELP STROKE VICTIMS? This is super cool and has to do with a very specific receptor call CCR5 that researchers just discovered slows brain plasticity after injury. It also allows the AIDS virus to flourish, so there is an AIDS drug that blocks those same receptors. It's now in trial after early reports that it seems to help stroke victims be able to regain function using the drug and intensive physical therapy. Read it here.

I've known two people who had to have hemorrhoid surgery in the last two years and the recovery from that is AWFUL unless you want to lose some weight because you won't want to eat because you don't want to poop. COULD BERI WEISS BE TAKING OVER CBS NEWS? This story is FASCINATING considering Beri Weiss left the New York Times five years ago in a fit of pique over their politics and lack of interest in real journalism. Now word is out that CBS parent Paramount is in talks to buy her project The Free Press (to which I subscribe) and put her in charge of CBS News. I hope this happens, but talk about an uphill battle for Weiss.
THE AURORA CITY COUNCIL PROTESTERS BECLOWN THEMSELVES And this is a GREAT column about how the folks who first started disrupting Aurora City Council meetings over the (found justified) shooting of Kilwyn Lewis exposed themselves as unserious rabble rousers who were simply there to cause a disruption. The problem is the Aurora City Council didn't let them.

WHY I DON'T TRUST THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION ANYMORE This is a really good story about how one of the most prominent organization for pediatrics continues to make claims about gender affirming care that are simply not supported by any quality evidence. Even as progressive European countries that pioneered gender affirming care are backing away from it because it hasn't done for mental health what they thought it would, the AMA is doubling down. The leadership claims ignorance about Evidence Based Medicine. Uh-huh. Guess how much funding the AMA gets from Big Pharma? We don't know because they don't disclose those numbers. Interesting, huh?
THE CHICAGO TRIB CALLS OUT THE MAYOR AND THE GOVERNOR Both have been running around saying crime is under control in Chicago. After a weekend where over 50 people were shot and nine people were murdered the Chicago Tribune calls them out and rightly so. This seems to me to be the real strategy being employed by Trump. Make Democrat politicians defend the defenseless over and over again, and they keep falling for it.
FLORIDA IS DOING AWAY WITH VACCINE MANDATES And I think this is a both good and a mistake. I get rolling back some, or spreading them out but this seems like a recipe for disaster. As one who believes in freedom, this is good, but there are public health concerns that aren't nothing. Will we see the return of polio? But the great part about the United States of America is that we can learn from other state's experiments. I sure hope they will allow schools to share the rate of vaccination so concerned parents can make their own choices about where to enroll.
