7/2/25 Blog: Weather, The Mortgage Market, And Henry VIII's Six Ex-Wives

GET YOUR WEATHER QUESTIONS READY As we have Fox 31's Chief Meteorologist Dave Fraser at 12:30 to answer all of your weather questions.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MORTGAGE MARKET And we're talking about this because so much of the economy is attached to people buying new homes I want to find out what the short term picture is like. I've got American Financing's Casey Schwartzkoff on to discuss it at 2:30. If you need mortgage help call 303-695-7000 or click here.

I SAW A GREAT SHOW SUNDAY NIGHT And it's part of a place called The Roaming Gnome Theater where someone took a garage and retrofitted into a cute little theater for various groups to use. And this weekend, the second cast (there are two) performs the delightful musical SIX about Henry VIII's six wives with a cast made up of high school and college age women. It's not Broadway, but they did an AMAZING job and I asked the young woman who directed the show to visit today at 1 to talk about it, so Brooklyn Stevens pops on then. Buy tickets to this weekend's performance and support this shoestring group by clicking here. Find out more about Brooklyn's group The Student Theater Passion Project by clicking here.

I WENT TO THE ASTROS GAME LAST NIGHT And it was clearly an Astros game as about 65% of the fans were Houston fans. That's it, that's the comment.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE CALLED GROOMERS WHY NOT STOP THIS? Hey everybody, look what kids are learning at Denver's PRIDE event!

Here is my suggestion to the gay community. If you don't want to be lumped together with creeps preying on children, why not put guardrails in place so the idiot parents who are bringing their kids to these events don't give ammunition to people who think you ARE preying on children? How about that? And who are these parents who are like "sure sweetie, hop on the pole, I bet you'd be a super good stripper!" Good grief.

MAYOR JOHNSTON TICKS OFF LABOR By doing away with seniority protections in the upcoming layoffs. This has created a huge kerfuffle and city workers are already lawyering up. The City Attorney says that any savings realized by the layoffs may be eaten up by the costs of litigation. The workers say a "merit" based system like the one the Mayor wants could lead to favoritism and bias deciding who gets laid off. This should be fun to watch, and I mean that sarcastically. This is going to insure that there is a farther left Democrat challenging Mayor Mike Johnston in the next election I think but we'll see if they get over it by then.

WHY IS PHIL WEISER FIGHTING TO KEEP ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ON MEDICAID? Our Medicaid costs in Colorado are insane. We spent $70 million just covering illegal immigrants, we have 20% of the population on Medicaid even though our poverty level is 10%. Medicaid is supposed to be for very poor people, the elderly and pregnant women. We've seen such mission creep as to be unsustainable. It's time to rein it it, and now Attorney General Phil Weiser is suing to keep illegal immigrants on Medicaid. By the way, federal law says that if you use the welfare system to become dependent on The State as an illegal immigrant could prevent you from getting legal status. So there's that. This editorial lays out why Weiser is going to rush us into insolvency even faster.

WHY WAS THIS GUY OUT OF PRISON??? What the deuce is going on with our parole board? Check out this lengthy thread on X:

You can read more here about this guy and everything he's suspected of doing but the real issue is that the parole board is not doing good risk assessments in the first place. I've reached out to Chris Vanderveen to see if he will come on the show next week to discuss.

JEFFCO RESIDENTS IT'S TIME TO STEP UP Because there are a whole lot of boards and commissions that need bodies and conservatives need to start stepping up to fill these roles! Find out more here.

IF YOU WANT TO WATCH FIREWORKS Here is a pretty good list of where you can do that.

WILL HOUSE FISCAL HAWKS CAVE? The Wall Street Journal lays out the howling from Capitol Hill by fiscally conservative members of the House. Some are saying the Senate version of the Crap Sandwich bill is a non starter in the House but I will believe it when I see it. The WSJ nails my cynicism with this line:

Skeptics on Capitol Hill said they have seen this film before: Fiscal conservatives and other Republican holdouts say they can’t support a bill, only for most of them to fall in line when Trump gets directly involved.

Exactly. I'll believe it when the bill dies. It won't. It just won't.

PENN STRIPS LIA THOMAS OF RECORDS As the Trump administration brings them to heel over allowing the trans woman to compete against women. The university will also offer formal apologies to the women who had compete against Thomas. Read more here.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE APP TO NARC ON ICE AGENTS? If you watch CNN you probably did because they promoted ICEBLOCK on their airwaves. I bet they didn't expect Trump supporters to turn the tables on the entire situation. Find out how that worked here.

TIME FOR A CHECK ON THE SOCIALIST UTOPIA OF VENEZUELA I will never forget the day I knew for certain Sean Penn was an idiot.

We all know that Hugo Chavez, the man he was lionizing here, started the collapse of Venezuela by amassing a fortune as the economy cratered. His successor Nicolas Maduro has continued his policies and now Venezuela is collapsing. How bad is it? So bad that President Maduro is arresting economists and financial experts whose crime was telling the truth about the economy. Inflation is running at 200% and massive outmigration has resulted in Tren DeAragua making a new home in Denver. Biden lessened the sanctions when Maduro promised free and fair elections, a promise he broke by refusing to accept defeat and arresting his political opponent (which the Biden administration also tried to do, just a point of order) and now Trump is putting the screws back on. Good. The sooner this country fails the sooner it can make a comeback.

YOU CAN'T OUTWORK A BAD DIET The notion that you can exercise your way to thin is a long held fallacy that is increasingly being disproved. Here is another column about that very issue. It's about what you put in your mouth hole, people.

BUT DON'T GET HUNG UP ON BMI Because the Body Mass Index is a terrible way to determine if someone is going to have health issues related to their weight. There is a better way and it's called Bioelectrical Impedence analysis (BIA) and most fancy scales can do this for you now. Read more here. How much better is BIA than BMI at predicting future health issues?

While these measurements are not perfect and are subject to variability, UF's nationally representative study suggests that this 25-year-old technology is more accurate as a health indicator than BMI.
Over the course of 15 years, researchers found that adults who had high body fat, as measured by BIA, were 78 percent more likely to die of any cause than those with lower body fat levels.
By contrast, higher BMI levels did not reveal any significant relationship with all-cause mortality.

Get yourself a fancy scale!

HOW IS IMMIGRATION FARING THESE DAYS? Well, "unauthorized" (read: illegal) immigration has cratered and reversed itself according to this Axios story. Authorized immigration continues at about the same pace. Dire predictions are being replaced with less dire predictions about the economy but it remains to be seen how exactly we recover from the loss of underpaid illegal immigrant labor. Read it here.

TRUMP SENDS PEOPLE INTO A TIZZY By saying maybe we should deport some of our own citizens. FYI, he can't do that.

LIVING NEAR A GOLF COURSE COULD BE CONNECTED TO PARKINSON'S Golf courses use a LOT of chemicals on the courses to keep them that way (I used to be married to a golf course superintendent so trust me on this) which is why I cringe when dudes drop their cigars onto the tee box when they tee off. Now a study seems to show a connection to LIVING next to golf course and Parkinson's disease. Read it here.
