During the First Balloon Festival at the 2025 Enrique Estrada Fair in Zacatecas, Mexico, a tragic accident occurred when a hot air balloon caught fire on Sunday (May 11). A 40-year-old man, identified as Luicio N, fell to his death after heroically rescuing two passengers from the burning balloon. The incident was captured on video, showing Luicio entangled in a rope as the balloon ascended, with flames engulfing the basket above him.

The balloon caught fire on the ground, prompting Luicio to pull the passengers to safety. However, as the balloon lifted off, he became caught in its ropes and was carried into the air before falling to his death. The two passengers were treated for first-degree burns at a nearby hospital.

The Secretary General of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, confirmed the incident and called for tighter safety checks during festivals to prevent future tragedies. He stated, "We have requested the State Prosecutor's Office to carry out the relevant investigations to clarify the facts and disclose responsibilities."

The balloon's operator reportedly jumped from the burning aircraft after becoming trapped. Despite the aircraft having passed previous safety checks, questions remain about the cause of the fire and any potential safety lapses.

Luicio's bravery has sparked an outpouring of admiration on social media, with many praising his selfless act. The incident highlights the rare but serious risks associated with hot air ballooning, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
