3/31/25 Blog: Big Half Hour Show Today Before Baseball

ROCKIES AT 12:30 And after watching some games this weekend I am actually hopeful that they can get their fielding issues taken care of and win some games. They are actually better than the 1-2 record if you ask me.

COLORADO REPUBLICANS EMBRACE SANITY And they elected Brita Horn as Chair of the State Republican Party! This is GREAT NEWS for any former Republicans like me who left because of the last "leadership". She is going to join me next Monday to talk about what's next for the party, but the super angry RINO watchers are not happy about this at all so you know it's good for the party. Onward and Upward should be the theme from now on. Read about the new board here. The wins were significant enough that no one can say this was some kind of squeaker.

SB25-003 IS WORSE THAN INITIALLY THOUGHT And Dave Kopel and Matt Larosiere write here about what the bill actually became, which is one of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. And contrary to what you may have heard, it makes buying the most common pistols for defense a nightmare in Colorado. Read it here, I'll get Dave on next week (this week is so screwed already because of baseball) to talk about it.

CORNER CROSSING IS NOW AFFIRMED IN COLORADO And if you're a sportsman, hunter or hiker who has come up against private property that brackets public property you need to pay attention to the recent ruling about that very issue. The case stemmed from a Wyoming landowner salty about hunters who used a steel ladder to climb over the corner from his land onto public land without touching the private property. The owner said it was still wrong and the courts just said no, it isn't. Read it here.

ANOTHER DEMOCRAT IS INVESTIGATED FOR STAFF MISTREATMENT And notice what the two lawmakers charged with mistreating staffers have in common: they are Democrat women. Read more about the recent claims of staff abuse here, claims which were concerning but lacked hard evidence to back up, so there is that to note. I have a theory about why Democrat women are more likely to be jerk, and that is that they believe people in power behave this way all the time because they are oppressors. Therefore when THEY get power, they adopt those false assumptions instead of being better. Just a theory.

COLORADO'S GLOWING JOB NUMBERS WERE A LIE This is is a good column on the quiet revisions being made to the job numbers that have been so unreliable the Feds have rejected what Colorado has been sending them. Now that real numbers are coming out, our job market shows unemployment to be HIGHER than the national average in Colorado. Huh. Imagine that. Read it here.

AURORA LEADS ON CRIME FIGHTING And former Denver top cop and now fellow for the Common Sense Institute Paul Pazen writes here about how the state, which CAN NOT make crime easy enough, is now trying to block the reforms that have seen car thefts in Aurora drop faster than anywhere else in the metro. Why don't any of the news media outlets that Democrats will talk to ask why they keep voting on the side of criminals instead of the taxpaying citizens who live here?

WE MAY HAVE REAL CONSTRUCTION DEFECT REFORM THIS YEAR As a bill that has been massaged by every interested party seems to be making it's way successfully through the Legislature. The details are here but it SEEMS to be good enough in my mind (though to be clear I am not an insurer for builders and they are the ones who are going to ultimately decide if this bill is enough) to get the condo market jump started soon.

THE SUNDANCE GRAVY TRAIN GETS PASSED Weird how RIGHT AFTER the Sundance Film Festival announces it's coming to Boulder the Legislature gives them a HUGE package of tax breaks worth millions. They are coming because of this, so I'm sure Democrats will love to talk about this, but why does THAT industry get such tax breaks for a once yearly event? Why not give those tax breaks to industries that supply year round jobs? Because HOLLYWOOD IS COOL, that's why.

NO, DEPORTATION ISN'T BECAUSE OF SPEECH IN THIS CASE The most famous illegal immigrant Jeanette Vizguerra is fighting her impending deportation by saying it's somehow a violation of her First Amendment rights, even though there has been a longstanding deportation order in place. I admire her lawyers for the creative approach but just because the prior administration's lax immigration enforcement didn't show her out doesn't mean such enforcement is wrong now. Read more here.

WE HAVE THE FINAL FOUR! And we watched almost all the Elite Eight games and these four teams were CLEARLY the best in the field. This is only the second time that all four #1s have made it through the Final Four, which is kind of cool. As an ACC girl whose team didn't even sniff the tourney I'm all in for Duke.

COLORADO'S ANTI-CAR STANCE HAVING THE INTENDED EFFECT ON ROADS Which are now 43rd in the nation for quality. What do we expect when our Governor, who is driven around in a gas guzzling SUV, wants us all out of OUR cars to make his travel easier? Read this for more, but this is another thing for the newly reinvigorated GOP to run on in the next cycle. Just check this bit out:

The recently released report found, “Colorado’s highways rank 45th in urban interstate pavement condition, 47th in rural interstate pavement condition, 35th in urban arterial pavement condition, 37th in rural arterial pavement condition, 19th in structurally deficient bridges, 40th in urban fatality rate, and 32nd in rural fatality rate.”
The report also found, “Colorado ranks 36th out of the 50 states in traffic congestion, and its drivers spend 36 hours a year stuck in traffic congestion,” and that, “Colorado worsened the most in capital-bridge disbursements (28th to 42nd).”

I'm sure we just need more bike lanes. That should do it.

HOW TO NOT BE EXHAUSTED EVERY NIGHT AFTER WORK I'm going to try this, but I remain skeptical.

KENNEDY MOVES TO BLOCK SODA PURCHASES WITH FOOD STAMPS And I am 100% here for this. There is no reason to buy soda. Period. It's toxic sugar water and the government has no business paying for it. Soda should be a "luxury", not a staple. Read more here. He's also encouraging states to ban unnecessary and potentially harmful food dyes from food production. Again, I am 100% here for this. I know it's not very libertarian of me.

MOSTLY PEACEFUL ARSON IN NEW MEXICO Oh look, the GOP headquarters in New Mexico was set on fire. I'm sure it was just a mostly peaceful protester.

THE UAW SAYS TARIFFS WILL BRING US JOBS BACK You really should watch this just to see Sean Fain, who endorsed Kamala Harris, thread the needle between giving Trump credit for tariffs while also giving him crap about doing away with federal worker union's ability to collectively bargain.

THE FACTS ABOUT VATS This is a great column that explains Value Added Tax (VAT) and how it makes our imports in other countries more expensive. The long and short of all of this is we have no free trade.

INCREASE PROTEIN TO SAVE MUSCLE MASS The Glucose Goddess has the details.

ADVICE FROM A 90 YEAR OLD MILLIONAIRE And I wish this guy would talk to older people who AREN'T millionaires too, but this is good.
