6/02/23 Blog: Hospital Transparency and How to Stay OUT of the Hospital

LET'S TALK SKIN CANCER FOR A BIT Michelle Zellner is back at 1 to discuss skin cancer and living in Colorado we all need to pay attention to this. Being closer to the sun means we get more of it, and Colorado has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the nation. If you don't have an annual total body skin cancer check it's time to start, the earlier you catch it the more curable it becomes. At least do a self check which you can read about here, and if you're in a relationship, have your partner pay attention to the skin you can't see. This is a pretty comprehensive page of info. You can also find Michelle and her great podcast here!

ANOTHER HOSPITAL PRICE TRANSPARENCY BILL IS BEING SIGNED TODAY You may not know that Colorado passed a bill preventing hospitals from dinging your credit or using the Colorado court system to collect if they aren't fully compliant with the Trump hospital transparency rules. Now they are going one step further and fining hospitals who don't make their pricing available in an easily searchable and downloadable format. I've got PatientsRightsAdvocate.org founder/chairman Cynthia Fisher on to discuss what this really means at 12:35.

A DEEP DIVE ON CRIME The Common Sense Institute is out with a report on what happens when penalties for crime are reduced at the same time fewer cops are put on the streets. It's going about as well as you'd expect, and this report is pretty telling. I'm talking to former Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen about it at 2:15 and you can find it on their website here.

AN ELECTRIC CO-OP BREAKS UP WITH XCEL Yampa Valley Electric Association has signed a long term deal with Guzman Energy to buy their energy wholesale from them and will be transitioning away from Xcel Energy over the next five years. They got stable rates and say they will be using more energy from renewable sources as well. I'll be watching this to see how it goes.

THE FBI IS GIVING UP THE DOCUMENT ALLEGING BIDEN CORRUPTION An FBI whistleblower says the document was never investigated while the shady Christopher Wray says it was just an uncorroborated tip. Wray is bringing the document to Rep. James Comer to review Monday. Mind you, an uncorroborated tip is what began the entire Russian collusion investigation that we now know was a complete sham. Odd that Trump's tip was investigated but this one, which alleges VP Joe Biden was selling access to his and possibly President Obama's office, was not.

DENVER'S VISION ZERO HAS BEEN A FLOP The well intentioned program that set out to reduce the number of traffic deaths has failed miserably, as deaths have INCREASED during this period. This is an article about a move to expand the plan and continue to do things to try and slow down traffic, but I'd love to see some data on those who died since 2017 in traffic accidents. Were they or the person who hit them on drugs or drunk? Did they get hit at a crosswalk or by crossing in the middle of a block? I'd like to know about these deaths before I can determine whether or not any of this is going to fix any of that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to reducing traffic deaths, but are we attacking the real problems or just making things harder for drivers? Oh WAIT, Randall O'Toole of the Independence Institute did that for me, and guess what? Pedestrians doing the wrong thing are getting killed doing the wrong thing. Slowing down cars won't fix that.

JEFFCO SCHOOLS URGES PE TEACHERS TO BE GAY ALLIES I have no issue with a teacher being a sympathetic ear for a student struggling with anything. Teachers are a great resource for that. However, JeffCo Schools has once again gone WAY too far by having training for PE teachers that encourages use of the kids preferred pronouns (which we know they lie to parents about) and even allowing biological males to use the girls locker room if they decide that day that they are a girl. One school in Oklahoma is being sued because a trans woman beat the crap out of an actual girl in the girls bathroom, but I'm sure that's just right wing hysteria. They also said this in the training:

“Unless precluded by state interscholastic association policies, students should be permitted to participate in interscholastic athletics in a manner consistent with their gender identity,” the training read.

JeffCo parents, is this okay with you? It would not be okay with me.

IT'S NATIONAL DONUT DAY! And I LOVE donuts but am abstaining currently as I try to lose the last of my baby weight from when I had Q. Yes, I know she's 14, mind your business. Find out where to get a free donut here.

YES, I KNOW BIDEN WIPED OUT YESTERDAY And took a tumble at the Air Force graduation ceremony. No, I won't put it on the blog because I think making fun of elderly, infirm people is mean. It's also so utterly pathetic I can't make fun of it. I will however point out the gross double standard being displayed by a media that took every Trump stumble as a sign of his infirmity while providing significant cover for a man who has completely fallen down multiple times in the last few years. You can read that here.

UNIONS LOSE AT THE SUPREME COURT The right to strike is a foundational part of our Labor laws, but the right to destroy equipment and cause significant monetary harm is NOT. So said the Supreme Court in a case where a concrete company sued a labor union when their members walked off the job and left concrete in their trucks, which essentially spoiled the concrete, causing economic damage. The Supreme Court said it had to go back to state court to be decided rather than be decided by the National Labor Relations board which is a win for the concrete company. This is the next in a string of union losses at the Supreme Court, but honestly, I don't mind them being reigned in on many of these issues.

CASEY DESANTIS IS A STAR And she's been unleashed on the campaign trail and people LOVE HER. She's gorgeous and well spoken, she's a mom of three littles with relatability that Melania never had. She's gonna be a force to be reckoned with on this campaign. Ron married well.

WILL THIS FINALLY KILL GANNETT? Gannett is the largest newspaper owner in the country and is known for their slash and burn approach to staff when they buy a paper. Now journalists are going to be walking off the job in protest of that management style in a move to pressure shareholders who will be discussing executive compensation at Monday's meeting. Will it work? Probably not, but why not try? I know a lot of journalists who have either lost their job or been given so much work they can't manage it all if they don't get fired by Gannett.

WE AGREE PEYTON, WE AGREE This take from Peyton Manning is spot on.

IF YOU STOP ON AN INTERSTATE AND BLOCK TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF HAIL Please see my tweet yesterday about my experience with that. I can't publish it here because of the language I used. But let's just say that if you stop your car in the active lanes of traffic because of tiny size hail and bring I-25 to complete stop you are not a good person. Period.

JAMIE FOXX MAY BE WORSE OFF THAN HIS FAMILY IS LETTING ON According to celeb journalist and podcaster AJ Benza the star suffered a stroke after a covid shot that has left him partially paralyzed and blind. The family has yet to respond but his daughter tweeted out that he was at home and playing pickleball a few weeks ago after a health scare. Don't bet the farm on this one yet, but it does seem odd that we have yet to hear from the star himself. Read more here.

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE IS IN A BAD, BAD PLACE And Barbara Corcoran, who made her fortune in real estate, says it's going to get much, much worse before it gets better. Read more here.

TAKING A DAILY VITAMIN MAY STAVE OFF MEMORY LOSS I know there are a lot of people who poo-poo vitamins but I'm here to tell you I am a believer. When I am regularly taking supplements I get sick less, feel better and believe they help. Now a new study showed that simply taking a multivitamin daily seems to improve memory in older people.

A LONGTIME NBA REF IS SIDELINED BECAUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA And no, NBA ref Eric Lewis didn't post something horrible about anyone else, he allegedly used a burner Twitter account to defend himself and fellow NBA refs. That is NOT allowed by the NBA so they sidelined him in the Finals while they investigate.
