The US Army began the 'War Dog' program on March 13th, 1942, which is why March 13th is recognized as National K9 Veterans Day, a day to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs.

Modern military working dogs and contract working dogs are trained to do a variety of tasks like: tracking, explosive detection, patrol, search and rescue and attack. But what many people don't know is that after their service is done, not all of them go home with their handlers and they end they up in kennels in the US and abroad. They do not receive medical benefits upon retirement, so they need the love and care every dog deserves.

Mission K9 , is a dog rescue in Houston, Texas that honors these brave military K9 veterans by stepping in to rescue, reunite, re-home, and rehabilitate them after their service time is done has saved more than 1,100 dogs and reunited over 540 with former military handlers.

Jen spoke to Bob Bryant, Co-Founder of Mission K9 Rescue this morning about the rescue and what they do.
