It was a finish for the ages.
The Denver Pioneers scored five goals in the third period to surge past the Minnesota St. Mavericks, 5-1, and win their record-tying ninth national championship.
The Pioneers were down 1-0 heading to the final period.
Then the floodgates opened.
DU tied the game with its first goal at 4:45. Ryan Barrow put it home.
Then at 7:33, Mike Benning gave the Pios the lead, 2-1. But they were hardly done.
Massimo Rizzo's one-time on a 2-on-1 break put Denver in front 3-1 at 13:34.
Minnesota St. was in desperation mode and DU made the Mavericks pay by sealing the game with a pair of empty net goals. Brett Stapley got one at 17:33 and then 27 seconds later, Cameron Wright capped the five-goal period with another empty-netter.
In all, DU scored its five goals in a span of 13 minutes and 14 seconds.
It was an incredible offensive display for the Pioneers. The outburst came against Minnesota St. goaltender Dryden McKay, who won the Hobey Baker Award as the nation's top player in college hockey.
With its ninth national championship in men's ice hockey, DU ties Michigan for the most in history.
