Sometimes in sports, strange things happen.
Like the Arizona Coyotes defeating the Colorado Avalanche.
Thursday night, Arizona edged Colorado, 2-1, the second time this year that the Coyotes had slipped by the Avs.
Devon Toews put the Avalanche on the scoreboard first with a goal at 5:48 of the first period.
But that was all the Avs would get by Arizona goalie Karel Verjmelka, who made 42 saves
The game ended with a fight, with Nathan MacKinnon of the Avs mixing it up with Dysin Mayo of the Coyotes with 3.5 seconds left. That came after a save by Vermelka.
Arizona got the win despite the Avalanche scoring the first goal. The Avs had been 30-0-3 when scoring first this season.
The Coyotes beat the Avs in Denver on February 1. Arizona picked up a point when it lost to Colorado in shootout on January 14.
Even with the win on Thursday, Arizona still has only 34 points, the fewest in the NHL. The Avs still have the most points with 84 despite the loss.
Colorado hosts the Calgary Flames on Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. MST.
Postgame comments from Avs forward Mikko Rantanen and head coach Jared Bednar.
