They were hoping for a storybook ending.
They nearly came up with one.
Martin Truex Jr. and Furniture Row Racing could not overtake Joey Logano in the final laps and settled for a second place finish at Miami-Homestead Speedway.
Logano wins the NASCAR Cup title that Truex Jr. and FRR was trying to defend.
Logano took the lead from Truex Jr. with 12 laps remaining and held on for the victory.
It was the final race for Furniture Row Racing, which will now disband due to an inability to secure the necessary sponsorship to continue.
Furniture Row, with Truex Jr. driving, won the NASCAR Cup championship in 2017.
