The meeting focused on negotiating a potential ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions with Russia.

During the discussions, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a desire for a ceasefire, stating, "The way is open for complicated negotiations. And to be honest, we all would like to see a ceasefire." However, President Trump indicated that achieving a ceasefire might be challenging, referencing his past experiences in settling conflicts without one. He said, "If we can do the ceasefire, great, and if we don't do a ceasefire, because many other points were given to us, great points."

President Trump highlighted a "very significant step" where Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to consider security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement that would deter future aggression against Ukraine. Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of security guarantees, mentioning the need for weapons, training missions, and intelligence support.

The meeting also touched on the possibility of territorial exchanges, with Trump suggesting that Ukraine might have to cede territory, including Crimea, to Russia. This topic remains contentious and will likely be a focal point in future negotiations.

The world leaders then met privately to continue their discussions. After several hours behind closed doors, they paused the meeting, so President Trump could call President Putin, a source told CNN. A spokesperson for Zelenskyy told reporters that the negotiations would continue at the White House. After the break, Trump held a "leaders only" meeting in the Oval Office.
