I proudly call myself "not a conservative" but there are gut instincts in me that are slightly conservative in the sense that I typically default to assuming that some institution, especially an American institution, that has been around a long time probably has some redeeming quality. That appears to be mostly wrong regarding Ivy League universities at this time, but in thinking about the Boy Scouts now changing their name to "Scouting USA" (they started allowing girls several years ago), my initial reaction was negative. But maybe it shouldn't be. And I don't mean that in a "girls and boys are the same" way but rather that maybe "there are timeless lessons of self-reliance and a huge range of skills that boys and girls can both benefit from learning."

I will say I was frustrated a couple of nights ago when former Redskins great Joe Theismann was on News Nation with Leland Vittert as a sort of ambassador for the Scouts and started to say something about "both genders" and then switch quickly to, I think it was, "many genders". Even if you think there are "many genders" that sort of obvious rhetorical pandering to a minuscule percentage of the population is annoying. And for the record, I have no objection to any aspect of LGBT. But I do have objection to forcing that sort of "tolerance" down people's throats. These sorts of societal change happen through evolution, not revolution, and I'm tired of the revolutionaries.
