And to think giant slalom is not even her best event.

Vail's Mikaela Shiffrin had to wait about a week to get her Olympics started because of the high winds that have delayed numerous Alpine events.

But the wait was well worth it.

Shiffrin blazed to a gold medal in the giant slalom on Thursday night (U.S. time), her second career Alpine gold, tied for the most in U.S. Winter Olympic history.

After trailing by 0.20 of a second after the first run, Shiffrin was fast enought to beat silver medalist Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway by 0.39 seconds and Federica Brignone of Italy by 0.46.

Shiffrin will look to become a back-to-back gold medalist in the slalom, which is on Friday. She won a gold medal in slalom in the 2014 Sochi Games.
