The Denver Broncos beat the Green Bay Packers 27-2 in the 2nd preseason game. Below is the recap and postgame interviews:
The Packers won the kickoff and elected to receive the ball.
In a rare moment, the kickoff was a touchback so Green Bay started the game from their 30 yard line. Sean Clifford started at QB and the ball was fumbled on the first snap. What should've been a TFL ended up being a 15 yard gain when Safety Devon Key grabbed Clifford's facemask after he picked up the ball and tried to run with it. After a couple of short runs, the Packers were facing a 4th and 3 from midfield and Clifford's deep pass fell incomplete as Ja'Quan McMillian had perfect coverage downfield.
The Broncos offense, lead by rookie QB Bo Nix, took over at the Denver 48 yard line. Nix and the offense were efficient, working their way down the field with great balance in the pass and run game. On 3rd down, it appeared that Bo Nix hit Javonte Williams in the end zone with a 14 yard passing touchdown but upon review, the QB stepped over the line of scrimmage and so the score was taken off the board. The Broncos settled for a 37 yard field goal from Wil Lutz and took an early 3-0 lead. Nix went 4-4 for 26 yards on his first drive including two passes to Tim Patrick for 14 yards.
Clifford and the Packers offense went back to work on their 2nd drive and were able to once again moved the ball to midfield but after a holding call they couldn't overcome, sent the ball right back to Denver on a punt.
Bo Nix and the offense, with their 2nd drive, didn't miss an opportunity to get a touchdown this time. Starting from their own 20 yard line, the offense moved efficiently down the field again with an 11 play drive culminating with a 2 yard touchdown pass to Tim Patrick. On the drive, Bo Nix once again hooking up with Patrick on a big 3rd down conversion and a couple plays later, a 23 yard completion to Courtland Sutton before Nix found Patrick in the front of the endzone.
Broncos now with a 10-0 lead, kept their 1st team defense in vs the Packers backup offense. Clifford was sacked on 3rd down by Zach Allen but JL Skinner was called for a roughing the kicker penalty on the punt so the drive continued for Green Bay. No damage done though as the Packers once again punted the ball back to Denver a few plays later.
Jarrett Stidham took over the Broncos offense, starting from his own 20 but a holding penalty by Palczewski seemingly doomed his first drive until on 3rd and 17, Greg Dulcich took a pass up the right sideline for 18 yards and drew a helmet to helmet penalty as well. The Broncos offense was, once again, on the move but on a 4th and 1 at midfield, Palczewski jumped offsides and the Broncos were forced to punt. Riley Dixon had a tremendous punt that pinned the Packers back inside their own 5 yard line.
With 6:19 remaining in the 1st half, the Packers offense with Sean Clifford went back to work. The Packers were working the clock and on the 9th play of the drive, Broncos CB Keidron Smith came up with his 2nd INT of the preseason and took it back 56 yards!
A couple plays later, Jarrett Stidham ran it in from 9 yards out and the Broncos extended their lead 17-0 with 30 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter.
To start the 2nd half, Jarrett Stidham remained in the game as the Broncos offense started from their own 30 yard line. A nice completion to Lil'Jordan Humphrey who fought for 20 yards and got the Broncos into Packers territory but, following a personal foul penalty, Stidham's intended pass to Marvin Mims was batted at the line and intercepted by Kristian Welch. Packers take over at the Broncos 46 yard line with 10:36 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Packers went for it on 4th down but an incomplete pass by Pratt gave the ball right back to Denver at their 37 yard line.
Alex Forsyth called for holding on the first play of the next drive which, in effect, ended whatever momentum the Broncos were able to grab and they punted it right back to Green Bay.
On the next drive, Nik Bonitto and Jonah Ellis met Pratt in the backfield causing a sack/fumble and gave the ball back to the Denver offense. Unfortunately, Zach Wilson was unable to do much with the ball with his first action in the game and the Broncos settled for 3 points with a 39 yard field goal from Wil Lutz, extending the lead 20-0.
Pratt and the Green Bay offense was able to advance the ball to their own 40 but once again, forced to punt the ball back to Denver who would start their next drive from their 11 yard line. Alex Forsyth was called for holding again, wiping out a 27 yard run by Tyler Badie. Two plays later, Will Sherman lets Morton run right by him to sack Zach Wilson in the end zone for a Safety. The score now 20-2 with 54 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Pratt and the Packers offense moves the ball to the Broncos 29 yard line on an 8 play drive but miss on a slant pass on 3rd and 5 and settled for a Field Goal attempt...it was wide right and the Broncos offense went back to work at their own 37 yard line.
Zach Wilson was sacked on 1st down and, even though Audric Estime had an impressive 9 yard gain on 2nd down, the Broncos would go 3 and out and punt it right back to Green Bay with 9:55 remaining in the game.
Michael Pratt leading the Packers offense from their own 25 yard line went for it on 4th down and 1 and Matt Henningsen stuffed the rushing attempt, giving the ball back to Zach Wilson and the Broncos offense at the Green Bay 34 yard line with 7:45 remaining in the game.
Zach Wilson found a wide open Michael Bandy over the middle of the field for a 22 yard gain and then on 3rd and goal, hit Tyler Badie on a screen pass that he scampered into the end zone to extend the Broncos lead 27-2.
Broncos would go on to win the game 27-2 and improve to 2-0 in the preseason.
The next broadcast will be on Sunday, August 25th as the Broncos host the Arizona Cardinals. Coverage starts on 850 KOA at 11am MTN.
