The Denver Broncos front office overhaul is complete as Friday the team announced the promotion of Darren Mougey to Director of Player Personnel. The new job essentially makes Mougey, General Manager George Paton's right hand man. This move comes days after he hired Kelly Kleine from the Vikings to be the team's Executive Director of Football Operations and Special Advisor to Paton.
In his new role, Mougey will oversee the day-to-day operations of the pro and college scouting departments, working directly with Paton on all player personnel decisions. "Darren is an outstanding evaluator who has an excellent reputation around the league as an up-and-coming personnel executive,” Paton said. “Getting to work with Darren over the last five months, he is a strong communicator and has great leadership qualities. We’re fortunate to have Darren leading our pro and college scouting while also being a sounding board on all roster decisions.”
Mougey has worked for the Broncos for a decade, most recently as the Assistant Director of College Scouting. He also served as the Western Region Scouting Director which makes sense as a standout high school quarterback at Chapparal in Phoenix, He went on to play quarterback for 2 years and then wide receiver for 2 years at San Diego State.
After Paton was hired to replace John Elway iI the GM Role to handle the day-to-day aspects of the football club, the question remained, would he hire someone to replace Matt Russell who retired at the end of the 2021 season after serving most recently as the Vice President of Player Personnel.
Mougey and his family have been based in Phoenix, but in his new role, he'll certainly be relocating to the Mile High City.
