Now through September 29th the Monarch Butterfly is taking center stage at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster. A super generation is making a 3,000 mile journey from Canada to breeding grounds in Mexico. To celebrate, 200 to 400 Monarchs can now be seen inside the pavilion. Monarchs are also outside in the Butterfly Pavilion gardens. A big celebration is being planned for September 21st which is World Monarch Day.
While we know a lot about other animals, butterflies still remain a bit of a mystery. While the Monarch super generation makes the 3,000 mile migration south, it takes three generations to make the return trip. There's now an effort to place tiny tracking disks on the wings of Monarchs to track their journey.
