Arapahoe County Commissioners Send Jail Tax to the Ballot

The average Arapahoe County household would pay 68 dollars more per year in property taxes if voters approve a measure to fund the building of a new county detention facility.. Arapahoe County Commissioners voted unanimously to place the issue before voters this November..

The current detention center is 33-years-old and is overcrowded and issues with plumbing, electrical and structural issues.. In some pods, inmates are house three to a cell. There is only one classroom seating 15 people, for GED courses and alcohol and drug programs.

A jail designed to hold only under 400 inmates routinely houses more than 1,100.

The tab for a new jail is 464-million dollars.
