Ground has been broken on the Central 70 Project in Denver. At a cost of 1.2 billion, a 10-mile stretch of I-70 will be reconstructed an widened over the next four years. The project includes a four acre park that will be built over the highway that will connect the Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods to the rest of the Denver. The project will include express lanes and is being constructed as a public-private partnership
It has taken 15 years to get this project through environmental studies and neighborhood meetings. But not everyone is happy. Protesters waving signs stood behind politicians and other dignitaries as they spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.
