Gun Seizure Bill Introduced at the State Capitol

With little over a week left in the legislative session a bill has been introduced which would allow the court-ordered, temporary seizure of guns from mentally unstable people who are a threat to themselves and to others.

The bill has been named the Deputy Zachary Parrish Protection Act and is sponsored by Assistant House Majority Leader Alec Garnett (D) and Assistant House Minority Leader Cole Wist (R).  Parrish was the Douglass County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed last New year's Eve by a man known to have had mental health issues.

The bill does not have a Senate sponsor and two groups, the NRA and Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, plan to oppose it.

The bill sponsors and supporters say it balances gun rights with public safety. There are 30 pages of text that deal with due process before guns can be removed.

The bill is expected to get through the Democrat controlled Colorado House but may have a difficult time in the Republican led State Senate.

The bill is supported  by Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler and the sheriffs of  Arapahoe, Douglas and Boulder Counties.
