This Week's Weird News 11/17/23

A maddening hum plaguing a town in Northern Ireland, a Russian wedding proposal that led to a couple being arrested, and a possible ghost photographed by a traffic camera in India were among the weird and wondrous stories to cross our desk this past week.

A pair of peculiar mysteries made the news this past week, beginning with a maddening hum that has been plaguing residents of a Northern Ireland town for weeks. The baffling buzz began back in mid-October in the small town of Omagh and people are understandably fed up with the strange sound that seemingly has no source. Desperate to bring silence to the community, local officials may soon enlist specialists to pinpoint the origin of the hum and, hopefully, put a stop to it. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, authorities are at a loss to explain a mysterious flash and subsequent boom that occurred earlier this week after experts indicated that it was not a meteor.

This past week saw a potential ghost photo from a rather unusual source pop up in the news after a traffic camera in India snapped a picture that appears to show an apparition peering out from behind a driver. The spooky snapshot was captured by an AI-powered 'smart' device designed to spot motorists who are not wearing their seat belts and, in turn, issue them a citation for the moving violation. When a couple busted for the infraction received their notice in the mail, they were astounded to see an eerie face lingering just over the shoulder of the man driving the car and they had no explanation for who the chilling interloper might have been, leading some to speculate that the 'smart' camera inadvertently captured a ghost.

The weirdest story of the week came by way of Russia where a marriage proposal at a Moscow subway station wound up with the happy couple being arrested. The wild case began when a man named Evgeny opted to pop the question to his girlfriend with a clever 'dinner' served among commuters waiting for their trains. While the romantic gesture was appreciated by surprised onlookers, Moscow police were not so enamored and, a few days later, arrested the couple for hooliganism because they had caused a disturbance for commuters. While his future wife received only a small fine, Evgeny actually spent five days in jail for the offense.
