10/3/25 Blog: A New History Textbook, A Movie To See, And A Crime Report

GO SEE DEB FLORA'S MOVIE THIS WEEKEND You guys know Deb from when she sits in with me and you may know her from her excellent YouTube show she does with someone else you might know (ME, IT'S ME) but you may not know she and most excellent husband Jonathan Flora make documentaries in their spare time. They made an excellent film called Whose Children Are They and the wonderful organization Braver Angels is hosting a screening of the film Sunday at 4pm at the Parker Task Force Meeting Room. Find out all the details here and Deborah will join me at 12:30 to talk about the film.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE COMPETENCY CRISIS IN COLORADO With former DA and now Common Sense Institute John Kellner at 1pm. They have written a very good report about it here. We will discuss it with John at 1.

FINALLY A TEXTBOOK THAT SHARES THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WONDERFUL OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION I've long said the worst thing to happen to the United States was Howard Zinn's patently Anti-American textbook. Now we've got a completely different sort of textbook called A History of the Western Tradition by highly regarded historians Allen Guelzo and James Hankins. Read this summary:

THE GOLDEN THREAD contends that Western civilization has, in our lifetimes, been simultaneously challenged by secular totalitarianisms and yet remarkably successful in laying the foundations for material prosperity around the globe. These contradictions will present to the reader the most significant problems facing Western civilization today. Guelzo and Hankins, above all, wish for their readers to “understand just how fragile our tradition is and how many times in the three-thousand-year-long history of the West the golden thread that ties us to our past and enriches us beyond measure has come close to snapping.”

Perfect timing for this sort of pro-Western Civilization revival that is desperately needed before people willingly march themselves towards totalitarianism. Allen Guelzo joins me at 2:30 to discuss it. Find out more about Golden Thread Academics here. Guelzo has written some really incredible books on Lincoln and the Civil War that you can find out more about here.

IT'S AN ASK ME ANYTHING KIND OF DAY And we might do some Dad jokes for good measure. IDK, we'll see.

TRUMP CUT CLEAN ENERGY FUNDS DESTINED FOR COLORADO And this part of the story from Fox 31 made me laugh because they asked Colorado's Congressional Delegation what they thought and they said this:

“By cancelling more renewable energy projects, Donald Trump is directly raising energy bills for millions of Americans.

Except everywhere that has leaned into so called green energy has the highest power rates around. The myth that unreliable renewables make the price of energy go down has been disproven time and time again, but they persist. I'm going to remind them until they give that up. I had my assistant Chat pull up comparisons for what energy costs in places that have gone all in on green energy compared to us. These are the Household (HH) rates and Industry (Ind) rates:

Keep in mind China's rates are artificially low because the government makes it that way. So does that look cheaper to you? Me neither. We need to stop allowing such nonsense to go unchallenged.

DENVER IS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS FOR PEDESTRIANS NOW After we've spent a ton of money on bike lanes and those awful ballasts all over the place pedestrian deaths have GONE UP. And not just a little bit, a BUNCH. Read this for more, but someone has some explaining to do. I wonder how many of these pedestrians were intoxicated when they were hit? I'd like to know more about the circumstances of these deaths and who was actually killed. Not blaming them at all, but are we even solving the right problems?

PROP LL AND MM NEED TO GO DOWN IN FLAMES Because they are the result of a stupid program that provides "free" lunch to all kids, regardless of whether they rode the bus or got dropped off by a mom in BMW. It was a dumb idea, a waste of money and was underfunded from the outset. Now they want MORE money after the Legislature RAIDED THE FUNDS for other stuff. These must die, read it here.

WILL COLORADO COURTS AFFIRM TABOR? This is a good article on a lawsuit over the tax increases just passed by our Tax and Spend Legislature. My concern is that our left wing judges will continue to let the Democrats tax us without our permission because they are solidly left wing.

CHECK THE LOST MONEY WEBSITE TODAY Because I got back 36 bucks and got Chuck back 51 more! We're rich! JK, we just have 87 more dollars. Find out if you have some lost money in this story.

WHAT THE DEUCE, AVS???? The Avalanche went on a team field trip to watch some NFL football and this is how they rolled up.

We all know the Kroenkes own the Avs and the NFL's Rams but this is just offensive. If I'm the Broncos I'm buying every seat in the first row of an Avs game and setting my players there in the opposing teams jerseys just to make a point. But this is why I don't own a sports franchise. This is just tacky.

THE BROADMOOR GOT TAXPAYER BUCKS??? Isn't this the place where a smoked Old Fashioned is 75 dollars? Why did they get over 130 grand of taxpayer dollars?

I'm sure there was a good reason, right? Right?

XCEL IS GONNA SCREW OVER EL PASO AND ELBERT COUNTIES By going over their heads to the Public Utility Commission to get their power lines approved that will rip right through those counties who get nothing from it. Xcel is going to bully it's way into approval. They have already begun to file eminent domain claims to screw over landowners who don't want giant transmission lines dividing their property, and they waited until the last minute to file for approval with El Paso and Elbert and now want the process rushed. It's almost like Xcel has already been told it's a done deal, isn't it? I think some well place FOIA requests may be in order to find out exactly what has been said between Xcel and the state until now. The PUC has declined to expedite the process. I hope EL Paso and Elbert sue the crap out Xcel just to hold things up. This kind of bullying behavior makes me angry. They could have been working with these two counties the entire time and simply chose not to.

WHERE ARE YOU MOST LIKELY TO CRASH INTO WILDLIFE? There is a list here and none of it is surprising.

THE SLANG WORDS WE ALL WANT TO KNOW Because they are the most searched slang words in Colorado, no cap. Find them here.

NEWS IMPORTANT TO MY DAUGHTER The new Taylor Swift album Life Of a Showgirl is out. I listened to it this morning and I like it way better than the last album. It's streaming everywhere and expect Taylor to be as well.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES ARE THE WAY FORWARD FOR AURORA This is a great column about how important community colleges are for Aurora and it's so good. Community colleges play such an important role in emerging communities where the cost of a four year school may be too high a lift. Read it here.

AN ARMED CONFLICT HAS BEEN DECLARED And now Congress should follow suit and declare war on drug cartels. I'm fine with this strategy as long as we follow our own rules for armed conflicts which we haven't done for a long time. Read the legal steps that Trump took to make this war a reality here.

THE GRETA FLOTILLA WILL BE DEPORTED BY ISRAEL And this story keeps getting funnier and funnier. The "aid" the activists brought for Gazans COULD have been delivered by Israel, or the UN (although they suck at delivering aid) but the activists didn't really care about Gazans, they were just trying to make themselves famous. Now Israel is sending them home.

IT'S ABOUT TIME WE TOOK OVER CHEESE AND BREAD Y'all, the cheese and bread in Europe will make you cry it's so good. So I'm super excited that two Americans just won what's called the Cheese Olympics in France. Two women took the Gold in the Mondial du Fromage, one from Philly and one from Seattle. Our cheese dominance has just begun. And now a Cleveland baker is headed to the Mondial du Pain, also in France, to compete in bread making. Just like we took over wine, bread and cheese is next!

THEY MAY HAVE FOUND AMELIA EARHART'S PLANE This is kind of cool.

BERI WEISS TAKES OVER CBS NEWS...MAYBE This is great news for the once great network. Not since they fired Dan Rather for journalistic malpractice have I had more hope that CBS can turn back into a real news organization. Word on the street is that Beri Weiss, the journalist who left the New York Times over bias and then started the Free Press is allegedly going to be announced as the new Editor in Chief for CBS News.

DOES BOB'S ATOMIC BURGER REALLY HAVE THE BEST BURGERS IN COLORADO? And I've never been there so I can't offer an educated opinion but I'm curious if you can. I'm putting them on my list of places to go the next time I'm headed to Miner's Alley Theater. They've been named the best in Colorado by Only In Your State.

COLORADANS DRINK MORE THAN OTHER STATES This is a deep dive into the drinking habits of Americans and when I got to the chart of who drinks in what states of course Colorado was well represented. We are fifth in the nation for the percentage of people who drink weekly and that's counting DC, which came in at #1. I'd drink if I lived there too.

ELON MUSK WINS AGAIN By becoming the first person worth $500 BILLION dollars. He's gonna be the first Trillionaire, watch it.

THE NFL CONTINUES GAMES OUT OF COUNTRY And they've announced more regular season games in Mexico City and Australia. That Australia game is going to SUCK for teams and players, that's 24 hours of travel each way. This is a bad idea

DAVE CHAPPELLE WHIFFS IN SAUDI ARABIA Did you guys know there was a big comedy festival in Saudi Arabia? They paid comedians gobs and gobs of money to come perform there, though they made all of them adhere to very strict rules about what they could and couldn't say. I wonder how many of these people signed the letter for Jimmy Kimmel's free speech while voluntarily curtailing their own for a big paycheck? Anyway, this was on X.

As Chappelle riffed on not being able to speak freely in the US, he had already signed a contract that included this provision:

I've always seen Chappelle as unafraid to push back, but now we know he sold his soul to the Kingdom so he can literally STFU about free speech. No cap.

TOYS R US IS MAKING A COMEBACK! In the form of pop up locations for the holidays. Watch this or click here, but we're getting one in the Denver Premium Outlets in Thornton.
