REP. GABE EVANS IS TRYING TO FIX IMMIGRATION And I'm here for it. He's on today to talk about the DIGNITY Act which would allow people who are otherwise law abiding to get some sort of legal status after paying fines. With the renewed border security we have, this is the perfect time to do something like this. Weld County Commissioner Scott James did a great column on it here. Rep. Evans joins me at 1:30 to talk about this, and I'm going to ask him about the story about his family lore, which you can read here.
THERE IS A FREEDOM FEST NEXT WEEKEND! And the Colorado Veterans Project is behind it. I've got Board President Brandy Maranian on at 1pm to talk about the event next weekend, which you can find more about here.
CAR THEFTS ARE STILL CRAZY IN COLORADO And Joshua Sharf shared his recent experience getting his car stolen here HE joins me at 12:30 to talk about it.
COMEDIAN DARRELL HAMMOND IS IN TOWN! And he's joining us at 12:15 today for a hot minute. Buy your tickets to see him this weekend at Comedy Works South at Landmark by clicking here.
IT'S AN ASK ME ANYTHING SORT OF DAY And as today is my birthday, I'd like to get advice from those of you OVER 56 about what I should be looking forward to or avoiding going forward.
CAN THE WASH PARK LOBBY STOP THIS IDIOCY? Denver is hell bent on making driving damn near impossible wherever they can, but now they've earned the hackles of a powerful neighborhood in Wash Park. The planned "road diet" of Alameda near Wash Park has neighbors concerned that the shrinkage will push more cars into their neighborhoods. It most certainly will. Why is Denver taking Alameda from four lanes down to two? For bike lanes, of course, and to make left turns easier. I'm interested to see if the neighbors can cause enough of a stink at City Council meetings to stop this. If they can't, will they vote differently next time?
THE HULKSTER DIED and what a garbage week for my childhood! I had Hulk Hogan on flights when I was a flight attendant and he was so incredibly nice and gracious to everyone who wanted to chat with him. He was also too big to turn around in the bathroom and had to come out of the bathroom to turn sideways to wash his hands. I'm genuinely surprised that any of the wrestlers from the steroid heyday are still alive if I'm honest. Read more about Hulk Hogan here.
WE'VE GOT SOME PRETTY DANG GOOD HOTEL RESTAURANTS At least according to Open Table. Find out which three made the top 10 here.
RICHARD HOLTORF IS THE NEW VICE CHAIR OF THE COLORADO GOP After a contentious Monday meeting. He beat Mark Hampton, a RINO Watch purist whose main goal seems to be calling Republicans names, in a close election. Read more here.
ANOTHER EXPENSIVE RUSHED PROJECT IS ROLLED OUT BY THE DOUGCO COMMISSION And this one feels and looks like a payout to developers using taxpayer dollars that is long on speculation and very, very short on details. The Zebulon Sports Complex may be a good thing, but as is the habit of this Commission, they don't really care to work to get the community on board. The project would have sports fields, baseball fields, pickleball courts and more, but the land they want to use may or may need more environmental remediation after being used long ago by a factory that made munitions. Check out some of this from CBS4:
"If, for some reason, we discover that it's not making sense or we're not seeing the right projections, then, we would certainly slow things down," Laydon said. "But based upon reports from the private sector and all of our partners, we're going to take off like a rocket."
Laydon says they're still working to identify private sector partners on this project. Laydon expects Zebulon to break ground this fall.
Wait, what? If the reports from "the private sector and all of our partners" is so good, why are we still working to identify partners? And if we are still working to identify partners, why in the world are we breaking ground on this in the fall? Once again, this commission would rather shove something through without giving out the details most people want. Hopefully the community can voice it's displeasure loudly enough to slow this thing down for proper discussion.
HAVE YOU SEEN THE TWISTED VIEW? With my pals Leland Conway and Ben Allbright? You should watch it.
DONALD TRUMP IS HAVING A GREAT WEEK The Epstein stuff aside, he's had a lot of winning this week. Check the list here.
OLD SCHOOL PARENTING IS COMING BACK IN STYLE And I don't mean with spankings, but with FAFO being the standard. I call it Shock and Awe parenting, where you shock the crap out of your kids by responding in a very dramatic way. It's worked for me.
A TASK FORCE TO TACKLE STUDENT ON TEACHER VIOLENCE Students attacking teachers is the direct result of lax discipline in schools. Not to go all BACK WHEN I WAS A KID but back when I was a kid if a student laid hands of any kind on a teacher he was perp walked out of the school by the cops. There should be ZERO tolerance for violence against teachers and we need to have more alternatives for troubled kids to get schooling with more restrictions on how they can act out. Now there is a task force to examine how rampant student on teacher violence is and I hope this leads to real protections for teachers.
TRUMP MAKES INVOLUNTARY COMMITMENT COOL AGAIN And I'm very glad. This is about getting mentally ill and addicted homeless people off the streets and into some sort of treatment system. You can read it here but this is long overdue.
THE US BIRTH RATE HIT AN ALL TIME LOW And this isn't good news AT ALL for the future of the country. We have to figure out a way to make it cool to be a parent again. Read more here.
STEP COMES TO THE SPRINGS And the wonderful program that started here in Denver is expanding, now open in the Springs. Check out some of these stats from Step Denver:
The results speak for themselves: a 2023 survey of Step Denver graduates showed 88% remained sober, 90% were employed and 91% had stable housing a year post-program.
With a 30% dropout rate, the program demands commitment but rewards those who persevere with life-altering outcomes. Step Springs, a near-replica with 50 beds, is poised to carry on this success in Colorado Springs, where an estimated 70% of homeless men struggle with addiction.
Their success rate is DOUBLE the national average. DOUBLE. And Denver's mayor can't even be bothered to tour the facility.
THAT COLORADO OVERTIME LAW IS BEING SUED OVER We all know that the Trump Big Beautiful Bill gave a break on federal taxes for overtime. You may also know that Colorado immediately passed a bill to hoover up that money anyway. Now that bill is the center of a lawsuit which argues it violates TABOR by raising taxes, which is does. Read more here, but I don't expect our left wing judiciary to do the right thing.
IT'S GRINCHY CHRISTMAS AT THE GAYLORD And I love this every year. This year's theme is the Grinch Who Stole Christmas and you can expect to see the Grinch in all his icy glory this December. Find out more here.
DENVER IS FINALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT PERMITTING But I am still confused as to why it takes six months for residential permitting. Can someone explain this process to me? I'm being serious. You can read about the efforts Denver is making to bring down the permitting process time that seem to be moving the needle a bit for residential permits, but but not for commercial projects.
TULSI GABBARD BRINGS RECEIPTS If you want to know what really went on about Russian collusion, you really should watch all ten minutes of this. You can read a good overview here.
STUFF TO DO THIS WEEKEND And there is a bunch of them.
COULD THE VIEW BE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK? Please God I hope so. They make women look stupid and unhinged. Read about their "hiatus' here.
IS VEGAS TOURISM IN TROUBLE? Vegas may have hit the ceiling when it comes to crazy room rates and expensive food. Tourism and bookings are at the lowest they've been in summer in years and that means there are deals to be had. I'm interested to hear ARod's thoughts as he was just there.
