DENVER HOUSING AUTHORITY IS THE WORST SLUMLORD OF ALL Now I understand why the City of Denver has passed so many new rules and requirements on landlords. It's because THEY are the BIGGEST slumlord of them all. The Denver Housing Authority is being sued by the family of an elderly woman who was living in the subsidized housing complex of Thomas Bean Towers when she died. How did she die? She cooked in her apartment as the faulty heating and cooling system pushed hot air into her unit, driving the temperature up to 120 degrees, which led to her death. Read this from Westword:
Still, her children were shocked after Pope discovered their mother dead in her Thomas Bean unit in May 2023. Johnson had passed away in her apartment, which measured at over 120 degrees at the time of her death, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. The OME determined that her death was due to multiple contributing factors, all of which were “complicated by exposure to an increased environmental temperature.”
At the time of her death, Johnson's HVAC system was malfunctioning, pumping hot air into her unit. She’d told DHA building management about the problem on May 19. By May 23, the day she died, no one had visited her unit to examine the problem, according to the lawsuit Latrisse and Pope have filed in Arapahoe County District Court.
If this had been a private landlord this would be front page news! But because the city ignored its own rules this woman died a horrible death and I hope this family wins the lawsuit they have filed over negligence. I bet no one lost their job at the Denver Housing Authority. The older I get the more I immediately think that whatever politicians are accusing others of is exactly what they themselves are doing.
JAMES COMEY IS NOT A NICE PERSON And now he's being investigated by DHS and the Secret Service for posting a photo of some shells he allegedly found (I don't believe a single word that comes out of this man's mouth) on a beach somewhere with a message. He then removed the tweet and posted a tweet so stupid I'm insulted he thinks I'm that stupid. Both are below.
Normally I don't get the vapors over such pettiness, but there have been TWO attempted assassinations of President Donald Trump, one he was lucky to survive. For the former director of the FBI to post this really is beyond the pale. I hope they put his sorry ass in jail though I know they won't. I have visceral dislike of this man for the way he abused his position and he's been a climber for years, using high lawfare cases (like that of Martha Stewart) to pad his resume and climb the ranks. He's vile. Just vile.

JEFFCO SCHOOLS HAS EPIDEMIC OF CHILD SEX CRIMES So says Jimmy Sengenberger in this column that shames JeffCo Public Schools for creating a culture where adults can prey on children. He's right, of course.
BUT LET'S TALK ABOUT TEACHERS FOR A MINUTE This morning (Mom brag incoming) I got to go to my daughter's high school where she was one of about 75 students who were chosen Student of the Semester by a teacher. It was so refreshing to see the kids sitting and talking to the teachers who wanted to recognize them, and then students got up to talk about the impact these teachers had on them. One of the kids said "thank you for making me like school again" and it made me realize I spend too much time focusing on the lousy bad actors and not enough time talking about the amazing people who dedicate their lives to helping young people achieve at their highest level. Sure, not all teachers deserve accolades. but far more of them do. If you've got a kid coming to the end of a school year why not write a short email to thank them for helping make your kid a smarter and hopefully better person? Just a suggestion I will be taking myself this year.
I HAVE TRUST ISSUES WITH DOUGCO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS For a variety of reasons most of which have to do with failure to follow through and provide evidence to back up various lines of crap Abe Laydon has shot in my direction over the years. They are now trying to shove through something that MAY be a good idea, but the way they are doing it has me not trusting them even more. They want to move Douglas County to a Home Rule county, and I'm not opposed to the IDEA, but they are not only trying to push it through FAR too quickly, they have tried to stack the deck by signing up to be on the committee that would write the new charter. And when asked about expanding the Board of County Commissioners, they balked. Of course they did, they don't want to erode their own power. I am a NO vote on this issue for now. For now.
CHECK YOUR KING SOOPERS RECEIPT I sort of assumed everyone watched out to make sure their stuff rings up right as I do, especially items on sale, but apparently they don't. Now a Consumer Reports investigation that sent secret shoppers into stores showed this:
“The shoppers found expired sales labels that led to overcharges on more than 150 grocery items, including Cheerios cereal, Mucinex cold and flu medication, Nescafé instant coffee, boneless beef, salmon, and dog food,” Consumer Reports wrote. “One-third of the expired sales tags were out of date by at least 10 days, and the prices of five of the products were expired by at least 90 days. The average overcharge we found was $1.70 per item, or 18.4 percent. Our findings suggest the typical Kroger shopper ends up paying far more for what they think are discounted items — all during a time of inflation and economic uncertainty.”
I am not afraid to tell the clerk, even at the self checkout, when something doesn't ring up right, especially if I bought it "on sale", and it seems you must do the same. This was a very clever move by the union representing Kroger workers to call Consumer Reports because they say the problems are due to understaffing. Very clever move indeed.
STEAMBOAT WANTS TO TAX YOUR SECOND HOME Steamboat Springs is going to tax second homes that are vacant more than 183 days a year. They will use tax returns, utility usage and more to prove homes are vacant and then slap a $3100 annual tax on those wealthy enough to have a home they don't use much that sits empty. If this goes through, and no one sues to stop it because it's clearly taxation without representation, expect other communities in the mountains to do the same, they will just let Steamboat figure it out.
A CHRISTIAN CAMP SUES TO PROTECT GIRLS In Colorado a private summer camp does not have the right to keep boys out of girls spaces. It's the law that facilities have to let anyone into girls spaces for dressing and sleeping based on their gender identity and this camp just said no. From CompleteColorado.com:
A Christian children’s summer camp located east of Breckenridge is suing the Colorado Department of Early Childhood over gender identity-based regulations requiring campers be allowed to use the private bathing, dressing, and sleeping facilities of the opposite sex.
Named in the lawsuit are Lisa Roy, executive director of the Colorado Department of Early Childhood and Carin Rosa, director of the Department’s division of early learning licensing and administration.
The state-licensed Camp IdRaHaJe (inspired by the song “I’d Rather Have Jesus”), had requested a waiver from the regulations based on religious beliefs, but was denied.
According to a news release sent out by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the lawyers representing the 75 year-old camp, “When IdRaHaJe requested to run its camp in line with its religious beliefs, the department denied the request, forcing the camp to choose between upholding its beliefs about biological sex and risk losing its license or abandoning its beliefs and mission to minister children.”
Thankfully the camp is fighting this idiocy.
A BABY WITH A RARE CONDITIONS IS HELPED BY GENE EDITING And he is the first human to have undergone anything like this successfully. He was born with a super rare genetic condition that affects the liver and eventually leads to death and brain damage and all sorts of horrible outcomes. His parents were given the choice to comfort him until death or do something drastic and untested and they chose the latter and it seems to have worked. His little body was flooded with CRISPR editing lipids that went to his liver and instructed his body to edit the single gene mutation that causes his disease. So far, so good. Doctors say it remains to be seen if the changes are permanent but this is very, very exciting news on the gene editing front.
FELONY CHARGES FOR THESE TEN YEAR OLDS IS STUPID Kids do dumb things, often without realizing how dangerous they can be. Never underestimate the creative ways kids think of to hurt themselves or others I say. Now we have an instance of three kids on a school bus throwing rocks out the window at passing cars. Dangerous and stupid, yes. But now we have law enforcement saying they are charging an 11 year old and two 10 year olds with FELONIES for doing it. WHAT??? Have we lost our collective minds? This is such a ridiculous overreaction to something that needs to be handled by the school district and parents. These kids are still little children for criminy's sake, not master criminals. STOP IT. And this part made me guffaw:

BEWARE OF FACEBOOK SCAMS AND PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNT I've talked about this before because I've had several friends have their Facebook account stolen out from under their noses because they did not have two step authorization on their accounts. Then scammers use YOUR good name to rip off your friends and family and Facebook doesn't do a SINGLE THING ABOUT IT. One of my coworker's wife is dealing with this very issue right now and Facebook won't do ANYTHING to help or stop it. I keep waiting for someone who has been swindled to sue. You can read more, but know this: META knows and doesn't seem to care at all. This article isn't even about that, it's about all the fake ads that Facebook is making money from selling non existent or crap products. META needs to be forced to pay up in my opinion and make these people whole.
WHICH AIRLINES HAD THE MOST COMPLAINTS IN 2024? The worst airline by far is no surprise, and it's our hometown trainwreck of an airline, Frontier Airlines. They were "first" in Overall Complaints, Delays, Cancellations, and Involuntary Bumps and there aren't many more categories. Did they anything well? They don't lose bags, but that's probably because no one check their bags because it costs too much. You have to think that at some point they will run out of suckers.
