4/16/25 Blog: I Need Woodpecker Help!

WINTER IS COMING BACK SOON So enjoy today and we'll find out from Fox 31's Dave Fraser when and what we can expect this weekend, when things are going to be a lot messier than they are now. He joins me at 12:30.

LET'S ASK THE ATTORNEYS SOME STUFF, SHALL WE? I love hearing about people's legal issues, maybe a throwback to when my dad would tell me about the cases he was working on, so today the fine attorneys from Bell and Pollock are in to take your legal questions. They join me at 2pm today.

IF A COUPLE BREAKS AN ENGAGEMENT, DOES SHE GIVE THE RING BACK? I just overheard a conversation about this and was sort of surprised to hear this woman, who seemed to have broken the engagement, contort her reasoning to keep it. I say a hard no, but maybe I'm old fashioned?

HOW DOES ONE GET RID OF WOODPECKERS? We've had issues with finches boring into our siding before, but now we've got a really big and loud woodpecker who has decided our home is his home. Any ideas on how to solve this problem? It's driving me crazy.

DEMOCRATS HATE CITIZEN INITIATIVES Which is weird because they mostly just ignore them anyway, as this bill to make the initiative process more "transparent and efficient" are being pushed by Democrats who are about to ignore the fact voters rejected a move to push up deadlines for the process JUST LAST YEAR. What does this bill, being pushed by some of the most progressive Dems in the Legislature, actually do?

Requires groups or individuals submitting more than five drafts on the same subject in an election cycle to submit a chart explaining the differences between each version. Currently, petitioners can submit several iterations of the same initiative, often with very subtle differences that are hard to detect upon reading.
Requires the Legislative Council to include an estimate of how much the initiative will change state and local government spending and revenue for proposed tax increases
Requires the title board to disclose whether the initiative modifies, extends, or repeals existing law or creates a new law. For measures with tax increases, the board must include the maximum amount of change to state and local government revenue and spending for either the first or final fiscal year the initiative will be in effect.
Moves the title board's final meeting from the third week in April to the first
Requires petitioners to notify the Secretary of State when their initiative has received 25%, 50%, and 75% of the required number of signatures and when signatures are no longer being collect. The bill also allows the Secretary of State to impose a fine for noncompliance, not to exceed $1,500.

That part about updating the Sec of State serves NO purpose other than trying to discourage signature gatherers. There is no benefit at all to the Secretary of State's office, it just creates another burden for petition gatherers and may discourage volunteers if the numbers aren't good This is yet another attack on the voter by the Democrats who don't ever want to hear from us until we vote for them.

THEY SEEM TO HATE THE CONSTITUTION TOO And Rob Natelson writes here about two bills that are clearly unconstitutional that Democrats couldn't wait to pass. One on guns, and one that tells parents they can't say certain things to their kids or they may lose custody. You already know what they do if you listen to the show.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS FROM ACROSS THE STATE ASK BOYS BE BANNED FROM GIRL'S SPORTS I saw a guy the other day comment that he doesn't understand why Democrats are so hellbent on letting biological boys into girl's sports. I have to agree with that sentiment. To put the feelings of a boy who believes he is a girl ahead of the feelings of THOUSANDS of girls truly feels sort of typical and sexist, because it is putting the needs of the boy above all the needs of ALL the girls. They are right when they say this isn't a common problem, which should make it easier to manage but it's not. Now 60 school leaders have signed a letter to CHSAA, the organization that manages high school sports in Colorado, asking that they implement a ban on boys in girls sports to comply with recent Executive Orders by President Trump on the matter. CHSAA says they are struggling to do this, but they are working on it. I'm guessing the sticking point is proving that one is born a girl. See if you district is on the list, I was happy to see DougCo School Board President on the list.

HOW SPACE FORCE HQ BECAME A POLITICAL FOOTBALL So, as of RIGHT NOW it seems that the Space Force Headquarters will be in Colorado. Maybe. Perhaps. Unless another snap decision is made in the meantime. It makes far more sense to keep it here, but Alabama is still trying to make the case to move it there. This is a great example of how messy a representative republic can be. As a taxpayer, I want them to just leave it alone now, as moving it to Alabama is unnecessarily expensive and we've got it fine here. But we'll see. Someday.

RIP WINK MARTINDALE The game show host kept many of us company when we were home from school during the 80s as the host of Tic-Tac-Dough, and now he has passed after battling lymphoma for the past year. He was 91.

WHY AREN'T RANCHERS SUPPORTING WOLF EXITS? Specifically a ballot initiative which is having trouble getting off the ground to repeal and end the wolf reintroduction voted on a few years ago. Their fundraising is anemic, and this part surprised me:

Also on Tuesday, a coalition that includes commissioners from six Western Slope counties, Colorado Cattlemen's Inc., ranchers and producers, conservationists and community leaders called again to halt the initiatives. The group, which includes county commissioners from six counties, sent Davis a letter in March. Still, the coalition has expanded in the past month to include the cattlemen's group, Club 20, the Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado, and stockgrowers' groups from Mesa and Grand counties and the Holy Cross Cattlemen's Association. This regional group represents Western Slope producers.
That follows a similar call from the Colorado Wildlife Conservation Project last week, a coalition of 22 groups representing hunters, anglers, and wildlife conservation organizations.

So the people most affected don't want this. Hmmm. Okay. I reached out for comment from the Cattlemen's Association and I'll let you know what I hear back.

DATING APP USE DOESN'T EQUAL LONELINESS IN MY BOOK But that's the headline in this article about the "loneliest" states in the US. It just means we have a bunch of young single people looking for love on dating apps because we have a very tech savvy population. But you can read more about how "lonely" we are here. I'd love to hear from you single people about what is wrong with the dating pool here.

WHY WON'T JARED POLIS PARDON THIS SOLDIER? I've talked about Jose Barco and how the US Army lied and let him down by not filing his citizenship paperwork while he was serving honorably in the military, as was PROMISED to him. After he got out he fired a weapon and hit a pregnant woman, wounding but thankfully not killing her. He served his sentence completely and was immediately picked up by ICE for deportation. From where I sit, the only hope that this man, who served in combat on behalf of the United States, gets a second chance is if Jared Polis pardons him of his crime. If he had not already served his time I may feel differently, but he has. He's been bounced to Venezuela, Honduras, and Arlington, and now he sits in a detention facility in Aurora waiting to find out what comes next. This is so shameful. If the Army just did what they said they would do he would be able to get the second chance I think he's earned.

A LOVELAND CITY COUNCIL MEMBER IS FACING A RECALL After an outrageous video of her and her posse of friends "meeting" a constituent at a public park came out. The video should be embarrassing to all who were involved, as it showed grown adults acting like middle school children itching for a fight. It was so bad the Loveland City Council voted 8-1 asking Councilmember Erin Back to step down from the Council. She has declined and continues to rabble rouse and make everything about her. Loveland residents, bring sanity back to your council. Find out more here.

A PAPER TOWEL ROLL ANALOGY FOR WEIGHT LOSS I have a better way to do this, which is take actual measurements of your body on a regular basis. But I'm sure this works psychologically too. Watch below or click here.

WHY HAVING LIVE ANIMALS AT HOCKEY GAMES MAY NOT BE A GOOD IDEA This condor was like "I'm done".

ANOTHER REASON TO ONSHORE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE This is a little disconcerting.

AURORA PD IS MAKING GOOD PROGRESS According to the most recent report filed by the Independent Monitor overseeing reforms ordered after the death of Elijah McClain. Read the whole thing here, but Aurora PD definitely seems to be making strides, I just hope the community learns to give them credit for those changes.

THE MANITOU INCLINE CLAIMS A LIFE A 64 year old Oregon man attempting the brutal uphill hike died on the Incline even though other climbers did all the right things to try to save him. Be aware of your physical condition before trying this thing.

EAST HIGH SAYS A SECURE VESTIBULE IS FAR FROM SECURE And I have to say after reading this comment about why East High Parents think a secure vestibule, which provides a barrier to entry in the front of the school, won't work there I agree:

"Everybody is against this because they know how the building works. People flow in and out of 20 doors at the ground level, there's dozens of windows that are open all day long and that vestibule is just going to slow down the flow of people in and out of the school," said East parent Steve Katsaros.

I'm curious as to the things these parents have decided WOULD help. The vestibules are a pain, but they seem to be somewhat effective in keeping traffic through the front doors under control.

HOME PRICES AREN'T GOING UP ANYTIME SOON We've seen explosive growth in home prices in the last 15 years, but don't expect that to continue. Two economists who forecast such things say expect price growth of just 1.8% in the upcoming year as the market still hasn't recovered from higher mortgage prices. Read more here.

NY AG LETICIA JAMES IS IN HOT LEGAL WATER And it's because she seems to have committed mortgage fraud and used government loan programs to do so. Whoopsie. I'm sure this is NOT a politically motivated prosecution just like her prosecution of Donald Trump wasn't.

AN INTERESTING RESIGNATION LETTER AT least it is creative.

NOW LIBS ARE COMING FOR OUR DOGS By saying they are bad for the environment. If this is the case I say screw the environment.

TRAVIS HUNTER SAYS IT'S TWO WAY OR NO WAY And I hope this works out for this super talented kid but we'll have to see.

ABOUT THE FIVE SECOND RULE If you believe that things dropped on the floor for less than five seconds are free from bacteria don't read this. In our house anything on the floor is mostly covered with dog hair immediately so if it can't be rinsed it goes in the trash.
