1/14/25 Blog: Economic Hopes For Trump's Second Term, Plus How To Not Drink

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE IN TRUMP'S NEXT TERM? The Steamboat Institute's Hadley Heath Manning joins me to talk about this column about her wishes for economic policy in Trump's next term. I think this is the biggest wild card for me about the upcoming administration and I hope Hadley is right. Find out more about the Steamboat Institute by clicking here.

MAYOR MIKE JOHNSTON HAD A PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY And his communications team needs to be fired. Or he needs to listen to his comms team if they told him to do something different. You can watch it here but let me summarize: Hey, some folks were murdered but that HARDLY EVER happens so come on down to downtown Denver and see how awesome it is!

He spent 8 seconds talking about the victims at the beginning of the press conference before telling us that this is "exceedingly rare" and that we are all okay now because this guy has been arrested. He could not WAIT to tell us how VIBRANT downtown Denver is and talk about how crime has dropped dramatically downtown and we all just have the WRONG PERCEPTION. Watch this claptrap.

He's right, you know. Back in 2021 I don't recall four people being stabbed in two days with two of them dying. One guy was not buying what the Mayor was selling and I can't play this on the air because of the foul language but I'm putting it here.

He's right, you know. Just saying. The alleged murderer has a long rap sheet and was currently working with a deterrence program that obviously didn't work. Read that here. His grandparents say he's been mentally ill for his entire life. Hat Tip to JD on X.com who linked to this helpful page from the City of Denver with Safety Tips for when you visit. They include:

  • Do not advertise that you are a visitor. If you’re here for a meeting, don’t wear your name badge when walking around the city.
  • Plan your route in advance. Keep maps and travel brochures out of site when walking.
  • There is safety in numbers. Walk with friends or other members of your group.
  • Don’t display cash, and carry your wallet in the inside front pocket of your pants or jacket.
  • Carry shoulder bags and other handbags under your arm, not by the handle.
  • Don’t wear expensive jewelry and watches when out sightseeing.
  • Demonstrate a combination of respect and caution around panhandlers and strangers.
  • Be aware of suspicious activity and/or people. If you see something, say something and report a concern to your hotel or venue. If it’s an emergency, please call 911.
  • Walk in well-lit areas. Use main streets and avoid alleys.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes up and not on your phone.
  • If alone at night, consider using Uber, Lyft, or a taxi.
  • Keep personal/valuable items in your hotel safe.
  • Remember, alcohol consumption diminishes awareness.

Can't you feel the vibrancy? Can't you feel the ACTIVATION? I know I do. This is was such a case of "who are you going to believe, me or the two dead people?"

WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST LET YOU NOT DRINK? So I've pretty much given up alcohol because it makes me feel bad and destroys my sleep. I may have a few drinks here or there but it's not longer a big part of my life. I've found on a couple of occasions that this makes people uncomfortable if THEY are drinking. I'm not in any way sitting in judgment of people who do drink, and frankly I wish I could enjoy a wonderful glass of wine without being up all night but here we are. This column by Charles Blow does a wonderful job of talking about this issue, and I think it's one many people struggle with if they've decided to stop drinking. We need to normalize not drinking a little bit more. For the record if anyone asks me why I quit I tell them the truth: it makes me feel bad and destroys my sleep. It's really that simple.

WHY DOESN'T COLORADO LIVE STREAM COMMITTEE MEETINGS? Fun fact, committee meetings is where the sausage really gets made in the Legislature and unless you have the time and means to drive to Denver (where double murder is EXCEEDINGLY RARE) you don't get to see committee meetings because they aren't live streamed, even though the general sessions are. Why not? Jon Caldara asks the question here.

NOW WHERE WE GET GIANT CINNAMON ROLLS??? The longtime restaurant at Johnson's Corner has closed, probably done in by the mania over the Buc-ees just down the street. There will be a new restaurant in their soon but no word on if the cinnamon rolls will be back because a chain is moving in. I'm guessing this hits longtime Coloradans hardest as I honestly never went there.

NOTHING PERSONAL AGAINST DARCY BUT NO Darcy Schoening has thrown her hat in the ring to be GOP Chair and I don't want her to win. She is part of the current leadership team and an ally of Dave Williams. That tells me all I need to know. She loves attacking fellow Republicans like this comment after she penned a nasty mailer that went into the 6th Senate District that created problems for the Republican candidate Cleave Simpson serious grief in his race.

Darcy Schoening, the Colorado GOP’s director of special initiatives and the author of the email, also blamed Simpson in a social media post Saturday. “Since Senator Cleave Simpson went to the media, to defend the trans agenda, and called my email ‘bigoted,’ I will address his actions and my response to his email to me yesterday here,” she wrote. “Cleave iterated that he is upset I ‘misgendered’ the individual in the pictures below. My original email, against his opponent and in support of him, is posted in pictures below. I submit that I correctly gendered Vivian and will continue to do so. Enough is enough. It is important we stand up to the agenda. If we don’t, we will lose our children and our country. We must have the courage to defend the truth and the fortitude to fight even when it is hard.”

We don't need more of this. We need someone who fights for ALL Republicans and isn't hell bent on driving people OUT of the party. Sorry, Darcy, that ain't you.

IT'S TIME TO VOTE ON RIGHT TO WORK And we wouldn't even be doing this if the Colorado Legislature wasn't working double time to force people to pay dues to unions they don't want to belong to. Because of that legislation there may be a ballot initiative to codify Right To Work into our law here. Jon Caldara, who has been criticized for NOT putting this on the ballot previously, says if the Dems want to mess with 80 years of labor balance in Colorado he's willing to do so now. Read it here.

NINE LIKELY GANG MEMBERS CHARGED IN AURORA And this is the culmination of the events that lead to unfortunate national attention for Aurora. Now the men are being charged with a variety of crimes including second-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault, aggravated robbery, second-degree burglary, extortion and menacing. I'm not sure how these figments of Danielle Jurinsky's imagination are going to show up for a trial but we'll see. That was sarcasm.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE BIDEN ADMIN DEFICITS This is insane and if we can't do something NOW we are done for. See the graphs here.

HAMAS SAYS YES There is an agreement to release the hostages and end the war with Israel. Of course it can all fall apart as the details get hammered out but we may be nearing the end. This time anyway.

NOT SO GOOD NEWS ABOUT DEMENTIA This is profoundly upsetting news. After age 50 we have a four in ten chance of getting dementia. To be clear, I'm not talking about a bunch of 50 year olds being diagnosed, but sometime after 50. The good news is there are things you can do to help your brain stay healthy along with your body, but they aren't fun. You know, proper diet, exercise, all that jazz. Read more here.

HOW TO AVOID THIS VERSION OF NOROVIRUS We used to call it "the stomach bug" but now we know the official name of "norovirus" and it's running rampant around the country right now. This article gives you ways to avoid it but let me just say this: Wash your hands, people, wash your hands!

A COLUMN ON LIBERAL LAWFARE And it's written by a liberal so this is worth your time. It seems this author understands that the lawfare Democrats relied on isn't a winning strategy. No kidding. Read this:

The problems with prosecutorial liberalism are twofold. First, it is a strategy that tries to use the legal system to do the work of politics. Of course, if figures like Trump commit crimes, they should fall under the purview of the law. But the law in and of itself is ill-equipped to settle the matter of a corrupt politician’s status with voters.

Of course we know that many people could see through the hyperpolitical nature of these "investigations" and didn't like that Democrats used the courts to try to defang a potent political appointment. But he oddly left that out.

WHY A LIFELONG DEMOCRAT VOTED FOR TRUMP The author above should read this column because it clearly articulates why Americans of all stripes gave Trump the Popular Vote this year. They are fed up, disgusted and tired of seeing a system used against them while propping up the Protected Political Class. This is an uprising, not a temper tantrum. Read this part:

For me, the answer lies in reclaiming the principles that made America great: fairness, accountability, civil discourse, and opportunity for all. This means holding powerful institutions to account, from Wall Street and Washington to the judicial system. It means rebuilding trust in our political system by prioritizing the needs of most citizens over the interests of the elite. And it means fostering a culture of resilience and innovation that empowers individuals to succeed in the face of adversity.

I'm not sure who would be against any of these but it's up to us to make it happen.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY SETS A RECORD AT BALL ARENA We don't even HAVE a Professional Women's Hockey team here but we managed to set an attendance record when two teams from Montreal and Minnesota dropped the puck. The crowd chanted "We want a team" and one must wonder how long that will take.

UH-OH BUFFS FANS Word on the street is that Coach Prime is talking to the Dallas Cowboys about their coaching job. Of course this is just talk, as is the talk of longtime Cowboy Jason Witten jumping from High School coaching to the NFL for the job. We'll have to wait and see.

DON'T OVERSHARE AT WORK That is the message here. Watch below or click here.
