TWO MURDERS ON THE 16TH STREET MALL A man, who was finally arrested Sunday night, stabbed THREE people on Saturday night one of whom died, and then ANOTHER man was stabbed to death on Sunday. We've finally done it, we've put the nail in the coffin of downtown at the very moment we are about to re open the 16th Street Mall after years of construction. The Mayor keeps saying that we just need to get more people downtown to stop crime but are you rushing downtown to possibly get stabbed? This is a nightmare and now two people are dead because leadership has convinced themselves that the problem isn't mentally ill people inhabiting downtown where normal people used to be. If I were Mayor, I'd have a press conference TODAY with the Police Chief to announce that beginning immediately we will be prosecuting quality of life crimes and will be cleaning up the streets. I'd demand that the District Attorneys office prosecute crimes and keep criminals in jail while awaiting trial. Then I would do it. But Mayor Mike wants to be seen as the Compassionate Mayor to everyone except the families mourning the loss of their loved ones this weekend. Oh, and one of the victims was a flight attendant on a layover, so now American Airlines has moved their crews closer to the airport for safety. That makes Denver look super good. Crime feels like its out of control because when I open up Fox 31's website these are the headlines I see:
15-year-old arrested in deadly shooting in Aurora neighborhood near Gaylord resort
Denver shooting leaves 1 dead, police searching for suspect
2 juveniles arrested for Sunday morning armed robbery of 7-Eleven
Does this seem like the Denver you moved to or were born into? Of course not. Elections have consequences and Denver is living through them right now. Imagine if all the money spent on illegal immigrants had gone into law enforcement. Just imagine because it didn't.
THIS AS OFFICE LEASES ARE FINALLY GOING BACK UP One quarter does not a trend make but at least in the fourth quarter of last year office space in the metro area was leased at a higher rate than it was vacated so that's something. After YEARS of hemorrhaging tenants commercial real estate pros are hopeful that we've turned the corner and are going to make headway on the hundreds of thousands of available square feet of office space. You know where it didn't recover as fast? In Downtown Denver, where vacancies rose 1%. Read more here.
WHEN THERE ARE NO VOLUNTEERS FOR THE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT This story should concern everyone who doesn't have the luxury of full time fire departments. Since forever rural communities have relied on volunteers to serve the community with fire and EMT services. Only now people aren't volunteering like they used to and staffing is falling short. Not only that, they are being buried in bureaucracy created by people who have full time fire services. Knowing what we do about the fire danger we live with in this state this should be a priority for us here in Colorado. What could we do to inspire others to want to volunteer?
HOW DO WE BREAK DOWN THE STIGMA ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH? And I am specifically talking about in the military and especially Special Forces. I know that many soldiers believe, and perhaps rightly so, that asking for significant mental health support means you are "undeployable" which is a death knell for someone's career in the Special Forces. This column by Vince Bzdek talks about the challenges when it comes to mental health services in the military. For starters we should be letting these men and women have confidence that if they seek help it won't destroy their career path, I think that would be good. This part is sort of stunning:
A 2021 study by the Cost of War Project detailed stress factors particular to military life: “high exposure to trauma — mental, physical, moral, and sexual — stress and burnout, the influence of the military’s hegemonic masculine culture, continued access to guns, and the difficulty of reintegrating into civilian life.” The study concluded that since 9/11, four times as many service members and veterans have died by suicide as have perished in combat. (emphasis mine)
We've got to do something, our soldiers deserve more. They aren't just grist for the mill.
THE EGG CASE WAS FULL AT MY KING SOOPERS YESTERDAY I just thought that was worth a mention. The Earth is healing.
GOVERNOR CONFUSED ABOUT WHO SIGNED BILLS HE SIGNED This editorial about the Governor's State of the State address and goals held this confounding exchange:
“It (deregulation) needs to come from the legislature,” Polis said. “So, there’s a proposal, I think, from the chamber working with Senator (Robert) Rodriguez and Senator (Paul) Lundeen, to create a mechanism for how we go in and help eliminate and reduce unnecessary rules and regulations. How did we get here in the first place? And, in just that short time, how did we increase by almost 8% our number of regulations?”
t's almost like the Governor doesn't remember that HE SIGNED THEM ALL INTO LAW. I realize that he may not have time to delve into the nonsense he puts his name on but perhaps he should do better? And when asked if he was going to sign a bill that gives unions easy power to take money by force from people who don't want to join a union the Governor squished on the answer. He wants to act like he's the solution to shore up his run for President but he's really doing nothing of substance here. Except signing bills he apparently doesn't read.
IT'S TIME TO STOP WOLF RE INTRODUCTION Even as Colorado is RIGHT NOW in Canada trapping more wolves to relocate here. Now there is a movement to bring it to the voters again, only this time I'm sure we'll get lots of pictures of dead baby cows with their guts ripped out. One guy is spearheading the movement.
DAVE WILLIAMS CONTINUES TO TRY TO DESTROY THE COLORADO GOP If Democrats wanted to destroy the Republican party in Colorado they would use a Manchurian Candidate who would rise to power and then begin immediately to sow division. The Democrat plant would use tactics that made staunch conservatives leave, use rule changes to cement power for the new destructive board, would end a century of non partisanship in the primaries and alienate any group that could potentially strengthen the party. Dave Williams has done ALL OF THIS. If he hasn't done it all yet he is actively trying to do it. He's the best gift to the Democrats in this state EVER. Read this column by Dick Wadhams about it. Even people who used to believe Williams was working for the party no longer believe so, as evidenced by this column by CJ Garbo, who seems to have tried to help Williams only to be rebuffed and labeled a RINO, which is the juvenile name given out by a group of Williams sycophants who can't even define what it is.
YES, WE ARE A SANCTUARY STATE And John Fabbricatore is having none of it. Watch his interview with Jon Caldara for more.
I'M SURE THIS GUN LAW IS GONNA MAKE CRIME DROP A very extreme new gun law has hit the statehouse and it's the latest in the long line of gun control bills that we've been told over and over again are going to curtail violent crime. The bill bans any weapon with a detachable magazine. Read this:
What they won’t tell you is that Colorado has passed 20 gun control laws in 5 years, yet according to Colorado Public Radio, Colorado is one of the only states in the nation where violent crime is not dropping, an epidemic that is encompassing Colorado’s troubled youth in numbers never seen before. You can read more about that here and here.
They also won’t tell you that this extreme gun ban they are pushing won’t make a dent in firearm deaths. The data in the graphs below is collected from the FBI. We are working to get the latest numbers, but year over year historically the murder rate for rifles is 0.089 per 100k population. That means that less than one tenth of a person is murdered with a rifle for every 100,000 people in Colorado.
But I'm sure this one is the one. I'm sure.
YOU SHOULD GO TO THE STOCK SHOW Especially if you have kids because it's awesome. Read more about it here. It reminds us all of the importance of Agriculture and Ranching to not only our history, but our current story as well. And you can pet a llama so there's that.
GLUCOSE SPIKES MAKE YOU FEEL BAD And this woman is FANTASTIC on it, and here she is talking about stopping glucose spikes because they cause all sorts of problems and there are very simple ways to mitigate those spikes. Watch this:
Then watch how to fix it here and it's remarkably easy.
CNN IS SO SCREWED They defamed a man who was working legally to get people out of Afghanistan and he sued and the trial is going on now. During the trial CNN messages were uncovered calling the man a sh*tbag and an ahole and generally showing that CNN acted with malice, which is actually the hardest part of a defamation case. This case is also being heard in Bay County in Florida, which is in the Panhandle of Florida and VERY conservative. CNN is so screwed. Heh.
HAMAS CAN END THE WAR TODAY By accepting the cease fire deal that returns the hostages to Israel in three steps. We'll see if Hamas accepts and if they don't, more Palestinian deaths will be on their heads. Not that they care about the Palestinian people. Sinwar's brother Mohammed has stepped into Hamas leadership now, I hope he gets his virgins soon.
US TREASURY DEBT IS NOT ATTRACTIVE ANYMORE and that has driven bond prices up to almost 5% and over that in some longer debt cases. This is horrible news for mortgage prices which are connected to Treasury bonds because they are sold as commodities on the open market. Read more here, but this is not good news. It also makes paying back out debt much more expensive. This has we had the highest level of corporate bankruptcies since 2008 and we all know what happened there. The cost of borrowing is killing a lot of these places at the same time behaviors seem to be permanently altered because of covid. Read that here. Is this the sign of impending doom or creative destruction as the market responds to those changing forces? We'll have to see.
