1/10/24 Blog: What is Psychedelic Assisted Therapy? Plus Brain Injury Help

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE USE OF PSYCHEDELICS IN THERAPY I'm talking with Parad Meier, a somatic psychotherapist who uses cannabis and ketamine in her therapy practice now and who will be using psilocybin soon. We're going to find out what all that means and how this all works. If you want to connect with Parad, you can do so at her practice by clicking here.

LET'S TALK ABOUT TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY FOR A MINUTE Because I've got Javan Bair from the Marcus Brain Health Institute on today at 2pm. The Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBHat the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a clinical care and research institute for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health (PH) conditions such as post-traumatic stress (PTS). Our mission is to deliver in-depth, interdisciplinary precision medicine to Active Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders with ongoing symptoms following a mild to moderate TBI. Lots of veterans struggle with the symptoms of long ago TBI and there is help available. Find out more by clicking here.

POLIS WELCOMES THE FEDS TO DEPORT CRIMINAL ILLEGALS But stopped short of supporting the mass deportation of the thousands of people Joe Biden let walk across the southern border. In his State of the State address he said a lot of things but we'll see what the Legislature does about any of them. Doesn't that need to the standard to judge his leadership by? You can read more here. To say Republicans were not impressed is an understatement. You can check their responses here, but in the part about how Jared Polis keeps calling Colorado the "free state of Colorado" one Democratic lawmaker made me laugh OUT LOUD this morning. Read this:

Senate Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez, D-Denver, used the governor's phrase of the day to push legislation he hopes to pass this session that would get rid of a law requiring a higher election threshold before unions can collect dues from non-union members in a unionized workplace
"I think for as many times as he said 'free state' in there, maybe the free state of Colorado's government shouldn't get involved with an employer-employee business thing and insert themselves into a negotiation," he said. "As somebody who wants workers to have a voice and a say in their business operations and protect themselves and wages and being harmed, I am a big advocate for promoting that."

So forcing someone who doesn't want to be a part of of a union to give them money anyway is now considered free? I for real LOLed hard on this bit of newspeak this morning. Watch out for Democrats rebranding "free" as something entirely NOT free from now on.

THE CALI FIRES COULD JACK UP OUR INSURANCE RATES Because we face many of the same challenges that California has when it comes to wildfire risk. You can read more here, but this is something we should be very, very concerned about. I'm not sure how to fix this problem, as California is likely going to be on the hook for billions of dollars in losses because of their insurer of last resort program. This is a very serious issue that will affect home affordability, something we can't afford right now. Here is a longer paywalled version of an article that explains how insurance companies are going to have to spread the risk.

TWO NEW PUFFING VICTIMS And I'm talking about cars being stolen while they are left unattended to "warm up" before someone drove them. Kids, this is a bad idea not just in Arvada, and newer cars only need to run for about a minute before they are ready to go. Leaving your car running and unattended these days in the Denver metro is really just begging to have your car stolen so if you're looking to make an insurance claim there you go.

JOHN YOUNGQUIST FINDS OUT HOW THE SAUSAGE IS MADE When his "colleagues" from the Denver Public School Board chastised him for daring to ask if a meeting was properly noticed to the public. The meeting was about HIM and pension rules that governed how much he is allowed to be paid for certain work for the school board. Oh, and he was EXCLUDED from the meeting, which is absurd. I would completely understand him not being allowed to vote on such an issue but why wasn't he in the meeting??? When he dared to push back he was called the carpet by the same crew that was found in violation of open meetings laws way back in 2023. I read his letter to the Board President that is linked in this story and there is nothing untoward or unprofessional about it. I also take issue with a school board attorney defaulting to the race card when he was pushed back again for not providing clear answers to questions Youngquist had. Denver voters really need to clean house on the school board.

YES, OUR SUICIDE RATES ARE TOO HIGH We are tenth in the nation when it comes to people taking their own lives. This makes me so incredibly sad. From the Colorado Sun:

Colorado saw 1,290 deaths by suicide in 2023, state public health data shows. Of those, over half were inflicted by firearms. Three times more men died by suicide than women, though women are more likely to attempt suicide. The industry with the most suicides was construction.
Other mountain states also face high suicide rates, which experts link to factors including easy access to firearms, lack of access to care, substance abuse, stress and the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.

As someone who lost a dear friend to suicide I can assure you that if that voice in your head is telling you everyone would be better off without you it is lying. The people who love you will never fully recover and they will blame themselves for not doing more. Don't ask me how I know. Please seek help. Check yourself into the hospital, do anything other than take your own life. It does get better. It really does.

EXPLOSIVE HOME PRICE GROWTH IS OVER FOR NOW And I'm not saying it won't happen again, but we've gone from 20% growth in equity to 3% and median home prices are falling a bit. This is all tied to mortgage rates which probably won't be going down much in the near term so the market should stay slow.

BIDEN'S TRANS HEAVY TITLE IX REFORMS ARE DEAD Because a judge in Kentucky ruled the federal Education Department’s interpretation of what constitutes sex-based misconduct was too broad, Reeves wrote, and the rules violated the First Amendment. There is a zero percent chance the Trump Administration will continue to defend them and this is great news for women everywhere.

FOX NEWS WILL BE FACING SMARTMATIC IN COURT And they want $2.1 billion for defamation after Fox News hosts repeated the claims of Donald Trump about the stolen election without evidence. Fox wanted the case dismissed but just failed at that. Read more here.

DELTA GETS KUDOS FOR HAVING HEART As flight attendant I had a very similar story of Delta holding a flight so a dad could make home for the premature birth of his child. Now Delta has done it again by holding a flight for 30 minutes so a woman could get home to see her dying mom. There is good in the world.
