11/1/24 Blog: Wine Pairings for Halloween Candy, And Yes on Prop 80 Please!

HAVE YOU SIGNED UP FOR CLEAN SPEECH COLORADO? I love this every year. What is Clean Speech Colorado? The mission statement says:

In a world torn apart by division and strife, Clean Speech Colorado brings timeless lessons of Jewish mindful speech to communities across North America. Our 30-day education and awareness campaigns unite communities in making real and lasting improvements in the way we speak to build a more positive, respectful and peaceful world.

In an election year this is more important than ever, and you get short "lessons" delivered to your email box every morning with a different aspect of speech and how to manage it. I do this every year and already got my first email today. It's a nice way to remind yourself of how to send energy out into the world, and you can read it or watch a short video every morning. I also like that because this is an endeavor started by Rabbi Raphael Leban and backed by The Jewish Experience, it helps you understand parts of the Jewish faith dealing with speech, gossip and more. It's very interesting and nice way to start the day. Sign up here!

THE WINE YOGI IS PAIRING HALLOWEEN CANDY WITH WINE! She's also talking about taking November to focus on gratitude, which is another way to get your mind right for the holidays. She's got a blog posting with all the candy and wine info here, and you should sign up for her holiday wine pairing class at The Wine Gallery in the Springs if you need some inspiration. Her Thirty Days of Gratitude Checklist is below if you want some help feeling it this year.

AMENDMENT 80 ON SCHOOL CHOICE MUST PASS And I've got Joy Overbeck, who wrote a column on it here, today at 12:30. She reminds you of who is lining up against school choice and that alone should make it a yes. I know homeschool families have been told this will open up government intervention into what they can teach, but there is NOTHING to stop the government from doing that right now. This provides some protections that don't exist, and frankly if this doesn't pass now it will embolden the teachers unions to attack school choice with even more vigor. It's not perfect, but nothing is.

A MOM RUNNING FOR PREEMIES My daughter was two weeks early and in the NICU for 12 days and they were the longest days of my entire life. But there were babies in there that weighed two pounds and had to stay so much longer than she did. At 1pm I'm talking with Stephanie Hauser, the mom of one of these tiny babies that had to stay so much longer, 147 days to be exact. Now she's started the 4those organization to support families of extremely premature babies and she's the focus of a new film getting nominated for a number of awards about her journey to run 147 miles to honor her son and bring awareness to the issues families face when their babies come way, way too soon. Follow them on Instagram here and Facebook here. Here is the trailer for the film. Find out more about 4Those here!

JD VANCE CRUSHED IT ON JOE ROGAN And I'm all #Vance2028 right now because of this interview. It's long as all Rogan interviews are, but there are some good snippets of it here in this column. Watch it below and see if you feel the way I do. He's making me feel a lot better about voting for Trump.

CALLS FOR DEEPER INVESTIGATION INTO GRISWOLD'S INCOMPETENCE GROW And now Governor Jared Polis is calling for an outside investigation of the latest disaster from the Secretary of State's office and this is definitely one of those "the coverup is worse than the crime" situations. Griswold notified federal officials of the breach but didn't think notifying the county clerks was necessary, which is absurd as they are the first line of defense for voting machines in their counties. Apparently everyone found out from the Colorado GOP's mailer about the passwords to voting machines being available online. State Rep. Lisa Frizell of the Legislative Audit Committee is asking for an audit of the Sec of State's entire elections division over this and other mistakes that have been made in the last few years. The Trump campaign is demanding answers as well. I'm not sure Jena Griswold survives this but her future political career is hopefully over.

WE NEED TO MAKE SURE ELECTIONS ARE SECURE And Heidi Ganahl has a long column here about the issues that need to be addressed to give EVERYONE confidence in our elections. She's got a pretty comprehensive list but she also reminds you to VOTE. Even if the system is not perfect it's the one we have in place now do make your voice heard!

THE CASE FOR GRISWOLD'S RESIGNATION Is made in this column by Jimmy Sengenberger very well. George Brauchler adds fuel to the fire here.

IT'S ABOUT SAFETY, STUPID I was talking about this very issue this week on the show. Downtown Denver is not recovering as fast as similar cities according to new report by the Common Sense Institute. They say high downtown office vacancies, along with homelessness and crime have kept downtown from recovering. If Mayor Mike wants to get people downtown they MUST feel SAFE. First, foremost and overall. Unless and until they address crime in a big way with lots of publicity around those efforts and get real results, downtown will continue to flounder. If you read more into the study, the issues of Green Dream edicts that are burdening building owners and the sky high minimum wage are being mentioned as reasons businesses are struggling. Government never makes things better. The one way they can, by focusing like a laser on public safety downtown, they don't do. Of course.

NO MORE FLUORIDE IN EVERGREEN'S WATER But not because of recent information that shows fluoride actually lowers IQ if the levels are too high. I do find this part of the story from the Denver Gazette interesting though:

“The driving factor for discontinuing the fluoridation of the EMD drinking water is for the safety of the water treatment plant operators,” the memo stated. “The chemical used for fluoride addition is sodium fluorosilicate, a fine, white, odorless powder. It is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin, or inhaled. It is one of the most dangerous chemicals handled by operators at the water treatment plant.”

And yet we ADD it to our drinking water. This is like eating puffer fish. A little is fine, but any more will kill you.

HAPPY DIWALI TO THOSE WHO CELEBRATE This is an extremely important holiday in India and if you know nothing about it you can read more here. I like that the overarching theme is the triumph of good over evil. That's nice.

WHY DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WOMEN ABUSING THEIR POWER HERE? First it was Robin Niceta who abused her position as a Child welfare worker, then a Parental evaluator who abused hers, and now a now-retired DNA "expert" in Boulder who did her job so badly that criminals are getting reduced sentences because of her shoddy work. Read the story here.

DENVER POLICE IS COMING FOR LICENSE PLATE SCOFFLAWS So if your tag is expired or you don't have on you stand a good chance of getting pulled over because of it. Just as a point of order, I know two people who got a DUI after being pulled over for an expired tag so that's something. Denver Police are doing enforcement all this month.

JOB CREATION IN OCTOBER WAS ANEMIC Adding just 12,000 jobs to the country's payrolls last month. Lots of reasons which you can read about here.

JERRY SEINFELD CALLS OUT A SCHOOL FOR CODDLING TEENS This story is so nuts to me but only because parents are spending like 65k to send their kids to schools that are destroying any hope of their kids being resilient. He moved his son out of the ridiculously expensive school after they sent home an email saying that kids who are "emotionally distressed" by the election may stay home the next day. Seriously. From the Daily Mail:

In an email titled 'Election Day Support', Stacey Bobo, principal of the upper school said it 'acknowledges that this may be a high-stakes and emotional time' for them. No matter the election outcome, [the school] will create space to provide students with the support they may need.'

My God, people pay for this. Some parents think this is great, but some parents weren't bothered when the school became a hotbed of anti-Semitism either, which is of course entirely predictable. And these are the kids we expect to be doctors and cure cancer. They can't even make it to school if their team loses. I feel sorry for them for having such crappy parents.

BOB COSTAS IS OUT! Of play by play baseball that is. He's retiring from play by play after 42 years at the gig. He will address what the future holds for him at a later time, but he's hanging up the mic in the baseball booth at least.

CBS CONCERNED TRUMP DIDN'T GIVE BIDEN A PASS They hate us. They really do.

Her "unifying" message. Mmmkay. Scott Jennings pointed out to his fellow CNN panelists that things are not going well for the Harris campaign no matter how they spin it.
