WILL AURORA APARTMENT RESIDENTS GET RELIEF NOW? Even as I believe that a Venezuelan gang took over apartment complexes in Aurora (though I do not believe they are there now) I also believe the landlords were slumlords, overcharging for crappy apartments they don't maintain. They are about to get off pretty easy because they have defaulted on a loan they used the buildings as collateral so they have been seized by a third party. Now a company in San Diego that helps provide low income housing for new immigrants wants to buy the place, but for far less than the slumlords were asking. Read it here. The immigrants living in the apartment complexes have invited Trump to visit. I wouldn't hold your breath.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER Because their "hate group" designations are repeated mindlessly by the media here when they need to bludgeon a group they don't agree with. Case in point: this story about the Governor suspending a program where you can buy a flag that flew over the Capitol that comes with a certificate "from the Governor". I think it was a mistake to then post the flag and certificate on X.com in a way that seems to be taunting the Governor's office, but here we are. But we need to talk about the Southern Poverty Law Center, which started as an organization to help poor people who couldn't afford legal help. A noble cause to be sure, but one they strayed from years and years ago, as their founder Morris Dees became more and more an arm of the Democrat party and genuine grifter to raise money. Now they name ANY group they disagree with a hate group and the media just laps it up. From an interview about the SPLC's history:
So a lot of times the SPLC would sue the Klan, and the Klan didn't have much money to its name, didn't have much popularity. Nobody wanted to represent them in court, so the lawyers said it was like shooting fish in a barrel to defeat the Klan. I don't want to go too far on that because I do think it was good for society, in a lot of ways, that many Klan groups were sued into bankruptcy. I think what the SPLC was doing there was good for society, but it was also the kind of thing that this is a different organization from when it was founded. And I think we need to acknowledge that and we need to notice that there were staff at the SPLC who said, even then, that Morris Dees was changing the nature of this organization, from representing poor people to a fundraising juggernaut that was focused on combating hate.
And at that time it was real hate. But he eventually ran out of Grand Dragons to conquer and started going more and more mainstream with the targets of the hate that Dees and his organization were exposing. And eventually it started getting to mainstream conservative groups, Christian groups like Family Research Council, Alliance Defending Freedom, Center for Immigration Studies. So we have really three organizations in one. There's the initial, noble SPLC; there's the "We're going after the Klan" SPLC, which I see as a transition from the first to the third; and then there's the third, the version of the SPLC we have right now.
It's not about hate, it's about fundraising and supporting the Democratic Party. This all matters because the Biden Administration has used their fake Hate List to send the Department of Justice after traditional Catholic groups based SOLELY on the SPLC's list. And then there is the misconduct and accusations of sexual harassment that got the founder bounced 2019 while the scandal was buried deep. Even NPR wrote about that here (in case you are mad I used The Heritage Foundation) and even The New Yorker featured a piece written by a former employee that shows just how the Center works as a grift, sucking up dollars from liberals who want to believe they are fighting evil when they are just funding harassment. That former employee called it a "a highly profitable scam". I've done the work that our "journalists" here declined to do because the SPLC does their dirty work for them. This is one of those cases.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF KAMALA GETS HER WEALTH TAX? We need to look no further than what has happened to Norway, the first country to pass a wealth tax on UNREALIZED gains, the same one Vice President Harris wants here. You know what happened? The billionaires just moved. Mostly to Switzerland, where the tax burden is MUCH lower. This is what will happen here and to think that the richest among us would not take their marbles and their money and go is just hubris. Especially when you consider how lovely Switzerland is. Norway, Spain and Switzerland are the only European countries that have a tax on net wealth. In Norway it also applies to unrealised capital gains (gains not yet realised through the sale of shares, for example). Owners of companies are among those hit hardest, often drawing a modest salary even though their company has a high value.
"If your salary is one million and you have to pay three million in (wealth) tax, it's clear that it's untenable," said Tord Ueland Kolstad, a real estate magnate who "grudgingly" moved to Lucerne, Switzerland in 2022.
"The system is designed so that it confiscates more than what you can produce," he said. To pay a wealth tax which can exceed their yearly income, entrepreneurs often need to take out dividends, hampering their company's capacity to invest. And those dividends are also subject to a tax rate of 37.84 percent.
Norway ended up LOSING about 600 million in taxes instead of getting the money they assumed billionaires would just pony up. This is EXACTLY what would happen here.
