8/19/24 Blog: Day One of the DNC!

TODAY WE ARE LIVE FROM THE DNC IN CHICAGO And if I'm keeping score between the RNC in Milwaukee and the DNC in Chicago so far the DNC wins for the weather (it's AMAZING) and the city (it's AMAZING). I'll keep score the rest of the week and let you know how things shape up.

THE PROTESTERS ARE HERE And there was the first permitted march last night and a few people showed up.

The DNC website gives a lot of information about what's coming up and look at the different breakout sessions they have during the day. They have one on how to organize on Project 2025! These people are READY.

THIS MAY BE THE LAST TIME ANYONE PAYS ATTENTION TO JOE BIDEN The President of the United States will keynote tonight's speeches and then will leave to return to DC. He is expected to make the case for Harris-Walz and then scoot out of town. Does he even matter anymore? I genuinely feel like the country has moved on from him and it's time for him to go. The Dems will honor him tonight before sending him away so the grownups can talk.

YOUNG VOTERS LOVE KAMALA And of course they do, she's not three times their age. They are also naïve enough believe that she is going to "fix" prices by fixing prices and that the 25k she is talking about giving first time homebuyers is magic free money that won't cause both regular and more housing inflation. Read about them here, we're going to try to interview some youngsters this week.

PRICE CONTROLS DON'T WORK AND THEY NEVER WILL but that is what Kamala Harris is promising to do with her economic plan rolled out last week. She is promising to go after "price gouging" at grocery stores, which is absurd and will never amount to a single conviction, along with "free" money for SOME first time homebuyers to use for a down payment. None of these things will happen, and even mainstream media is pushing back on her grandiose giveaways. To say the Washington Post didn't like it is an understatement. Their editorial was pretty scathing:

Americans are clearly still anxious and angry about the high cost of groceries, housing and even $5.29 Big Macs. While the inflation rate has cooled substantially since the 2022 peak, an ostensible Biden-Harris administration accomplishment, prices remain elevated relative to the Trump years. So it’s a real political issue for Ms. Harris. One way to handle it might be to level with voters, telling them that inflation spiked in 2021 mainly because the pandemic snarled supply chains, and that the Federal Reserve’s policies, which the Biden-Harris administration supported, are working to slow it. The vice president instead opted for a less forthright route: Blaming big business. She vowed to go after “price gouging” by grocery stores, landlords, pharmaceutical companies and other supposed corporate perpetrators by having the Federal Trade Commission enforce a vaguely defined “federal ban on price gouging.”

They didn't hate it all, supporting the extension of the Earned Income Tax Credit and other stuff that won't directly cost money.

WALZ LOVES COMMUNISM And this would be something he should be asked about if he ever sits for an interview. He has generously praised the Chinese system after spending lots of time there over the years. Read it here.

XI JINPING DAVE LOSES IN COURT And now Colorado Republicans who are upset at his garbage leadership of the state GOP will have the chance to vote him out this Saturday. A judge finally rightly ruled that the courts have no business in interparty squabbles as they have ruled before. Now the meeting this Saturday in Brighton is CRITICALLY important to get the Colorado GOP moving forward again without the baggage of a man who looted the party funds he hasn't been raising to support his own failing campaign. He. Must. Go.

I DON'T NORMALLY TALK SPORTS BUT DID YOU SEE BO NIX? Arod is already a BO-LIEVER and I am not on the Nix train as well. Could we finally have our quarterback??? Read about yesterday's whooping of Green Bay's second string here.

IS THIS REALLY OUR SIGNATURE DESSERT? I love lists like this one where they tell you the "signature" dessert of every state. I always look at my home state of Florida to see if they get that right first (they did here, key lime pie) and then check Colorado. Before I tell you what it is, what do you THINK it is? I think their choice is a really strong choice even if I won't eat it.

RANCHERS WANT LIVESTOCK EATING WOLVED KILLED And I don't blame them as two wolves in Grand and Jackson county are treating livestock like a buffet. Now the ranchers want Colorado Parks and Wildlife to take out the two wolves and I don't mean remove, I mean TAKE OUT. If I were the ranchers I'd bring the bodies of the cows to the steps of the Capitol and drop them off just so Front Rangers can see what they voted for.

COLORADO IS A QUANTUM COMPUTING HOTBED This is a great column on how strong the quantum computing industry in Colorado is and how we are getting more money than most other states to develop the industry here. I genuinely am not sure what quantum computing actually is but I feel good about this somehow.

NOW ENVIRONMENTALITS HATE *CHECKS NOTES* WIND TURBINES? I'd love to be able to ask Greta Thunberg where we are supposed to get our energy from if she, the queen of serious climate scolding, doesn't want wind turbines either? This column makes the case against the greenies stopping wind farm production by accusing wind turbines of all kinds of nefariousness. I actually went to a wind farm and stood within 100 feet of one of those giant things to see how loud it is. It wasn't silent, but it wasn't loud.

HOMELESS POLICY AND PARKINSON'S LAW Jon Caldara writes about when reality meets homeless policy in Denver and how Parkinson's Law means it may always fail. What is Parkinson's Law? Read it here.

RIP PHIL DONAHUE This one hurts. When I was a kid and you stayed home from school chances are you watched Donahue from the couch while you were convalescing. Now he's dead at 88 and we have him to thank/blame for the rise of talk shows on television, the likes of which don't exist anymore. Before the cozy celebrity lead chat shows took over, Phil was mixing it up daily with all sorts of newsmakers while bopping about the studio audience letting people ask questions. You can find a Best of Donahue list her on YouTube to see exactly what I'm talking about. Here is a fun snippet.

THIS STAT WILL GET DEMOCRATS ELECTED And start revolutions if you ask me. The "average" CEO for an S+P company made 268 TIMES what their 'average" worker made. Now I put "average" in air quotes because a few CEO's made a sick amount of money that skewed this upward, but CEO pay has skyrocketed while worker pay has not. I'm all for paying the person in charge of EVERYTHING well, but these numbers are WAY out of historical norms when compared to worker pay and are almost certainly going to be used to start unions or a revolution. Just saying. These board members approving these contracts need to check themselves.

SCROLLING THROUGH VIDEOS ONLINE WILL MAKE YOU MORE BORED Because boredom has to do with attention span and ours are getting very short. Read more here.

IS LATE NIGHT TALK DEAD? If it is they have no one to blame but themselves after becoming arms of the Democrat party instead of entertainment. Read more here. I go to bed way before these shows air but I used to watch clips of certain guests the next day but why? So I can be insulted? No thank you.

CANDACE OWENS HAS LOST HER DAMN MIND As she is now spouting off any and all anti-Semitic stuff she can lay her stupid little hands on. She went on a rant yesterday that repeated some of the worst anti-Semitic tropes out there. I used to feel sorry for her but now I just feel disgust.

AN AMAZONIAN TRIBE SHOWS HOW TO LIVE LONGER Live a subsistence life of daily hunting, foraging and farming, eat a ton of fiber and carbs and don't have a high stress job. You're welcome but I will pass.

I'M SURE THIS WON'T CAUSE ANY HAVOC a family in Scotland is fighting to allow their anxiety ridden daughter to take her therapy dog to school. This would be the best gig ever for the dog, but I can see huge issues in the classroom with allergies and kids being kids.

DOES A PYRAMID COLLAPSE MEAN THE END OF THE WORLD? Heavy rains have caused an ancient pyramid in Mexico to collapse and now members of the tribe those pyramids were built by say this could signal an impending event if the gods are displeased.

AN APP FOR A MEAL WITH A NEW FRIEND SOUNDS DELIGHTFUL If you're having trouble meeting people, why not meet someone for breakfast? There's an app for that. Find more here.
