8/5/24 Blog: It's a This and That and Secret Service Failures Kind Of Day

BK JOINS US FROM CANTON THIS AFTERNOON To celebrate the induction of Randy Gradishar into the Hall of Fame. He hops on at 2:30 to chat about Randy's new gold jacket. Read more about Randy's induction here.

GOOD NEWS ON THE FIRE FRONT God Bless the firefighters who put themselves into harm's way to save homes and people and livestock. Good news on the fire front as we have containment increases in all of them. The Alexander Fire has taken 25 homes but is 54% contained, the Stone Canyon fire is 100% contained, and the Quarry Fire is 35% contained. Big shout out to all the Coloradans who are making sure these firefighters are fed and hydrated and have clean socks and clothes while they fight these fires.

THE SECRET SERVICE ADMITS ITS FAILURE But they did so on a Friday afternoon news dump designed to obscure it. Read this story about the numerous admitted failures that are almost beyond belief. From HotAir.com

Here are just a few inexplicable things he revealed:
the Secret Service had no radio communications not only with the local police but also with the snipers
most of the vital communications were made using texts over an overloaded cell phone network
There are no recordings of the Secret Service communications, although there are of the locals
Rowe's assertions about the responsibilities of the local snipers didn't actually come from the local snipers--it was just made up by the Secret Service (we would know much less were it not for the locals)
the Secret Service command center was not co-located with the local police
The investigators have YET to talk to the local police who were assisting the SS, including the snipers (after three weeks!)
Butler was the VERY FIRST TIME that the Secret Service provided snipers for a Trump rally this election cycle

But I'm sure it's fine. It's all fine. I've got David Strom on today at 1 to discuss.

THE WORLD IS WORRIED ABOUT A US RECESSION And the world markets got SHOOK by this. The Japanese Nikkei Index crapped the bed with the biggest daily loss EVER today. It's almost like people think the Biden-Harris economy isn't as good as they want us to think. This article fact checks the rosy statement given by the Administration and it isn't good. Not good at all. This all started with the very soft job numbers, which you can see in the articles above are constantly being revised downward. Now this column digs into the Household Survey numbers and they are much, much worse. Maybe this is why Biden was losing.

THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IS MEDDLING IN THE ELECTION AGAIN And we know this because Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco told a group of attorneys that the Justice Department WILL be "informing" social media companies of "election interference" attempts in the upcoming election. Just like they notified social media companies that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation. This is alarming even though Monaco pointed out that the social media companies would have the option of whether or not they will act on such information. Sure they will.

AND THE DOJ IS NOW SUING TIKTOK For grabbing up too much information on children as the kids scroll mindlessly through TikTok instead of doing things that are good for kids. The issue is this:

The latest lawsuit focuses on allegations that TikTok, a trend-setting platform popular among young users, and its China-based parent company ByteDance violated a federal law that requires kid-oriented apps and websites to get parental consent before collecting personal information of children under 13. It also says the companies failed to honor requests from parents who wanted their children’s accounts deleted, and chose not to delete accounts even when the firms knew they belonged to kids under 13.

Part of me thinks it will be hilarious if we defeat the Chinese communists with our regulatory state. Heh.

NEIL GORSUCH WRITES ABOUT THE CRIPPLING REGULATORY STATE In his new book. I'm going to try and get him on the show about it, read more here and here.

WHAT WE SHOULD LEARN FROM VENEZUELAN PROTESTS And long and short of it is that it can happen here. Read more here. One thing they forgot to mention is that all of this happened pretty much AFTER the guns were confiscated in the name of "safety". How is that working out of them now?

FREE SPEECH WINS AGAIN IN COLORADO And this has to do with records of an internal affairs investigation into how a police officer in Ouray behaved when arresting a 14 year old boy. When the local newspaper filed a Freedom of Information Act request they were provided documents that were nearly completely redacted, meaning there were black lines where text should be. Not cool, Ouray. The paper sued and just won. Read about it here. This is the sort of thing that Gorsuch writes about in his book above.

IF YOU LOVE TRUE CRIME STORIES You may be out of luck soon, as the people being depicted in these shows are now suing with some regularity. I love them too so I'm concerned that Hollywood (read: Netflix) will chicken out on this sort of content. Now that people are suing insuring these projects has gotten more expensive and hoops must be jumped through to get things done. All in all it will probably just lead to better vetting and larger disclaimers of "BASED on a true story" but people love these so I don't see them going completely away.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST ICEBERG IS JUST SPINNING IT'S WHEELS Okay, it's doesn't actually have wheels, but iceberg A23, larger than greater London, has hit an ocean vortex and is now spinning in place. This iceberg won't die. It broke off of Antarctica in 1986 and promptly got stuck on the seabed. It recently broke free and started drifting north, only to get caught in a vortex caused by a ridge on the ocean floor. Now it's just spinning in place. I find this super interesting as Earth is amazing.

SO FORT COLLINS HAS A GANG PROBLEM? I mean, what? There have been several incidents of gang violence in Fort Collins in the last few weeks and police are asking for help and for you to keep your eyes open. This story is frankly short on details of WHAT you are supposed to keep your eyes open for though. Like who is in these gangs? Are they white kids? Black kids? Hispanic kids? We need a few more details here. From the article:

Additional charges are anticipated from this investigation, and the suspects’ were intentionally not named to “prevent any notoriety.” The agency credited the success of their investigation to the “numerous individuals” who came forward with information and the locations of different pieces of evidence.
“We ask our residents to remain vigilant regarding suspicious and criminal activity and to always report to police immediately by calling 911,” Fort Collins Police Services said.

So keep your eyes out for somebody doing something I guess.

EVERYONE NEEDS A HAIRCUT THEY REGRET And apparently for teen boys right now it's the "broccoli cut". I am not making this up. When reading it I thought of the OG Broccoli Cut guy Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons.

KAMALA HARRIS IS STAUNCHLY ANTI DEATH PENALTY And as people begin to actually look into her abysmal record and policy positions expect more columns like this one reminding people that she would not pursue the death penalty for a terrorist who attacked the US. Sort of makes sense why the Biden-Harris admin let the 9/11 terrorists off with a life sentence.

IS WORLD WAR THREE AROUND THE CORNER? The Middle East is simmering as Israel waits for the retaliation promised by Iran after Israel took out several proxies, one of them in Tehran. Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel and Iran has said an attack is imminent. Pro terrorists demonstrators took over New York this weekend to celebrate the terrorists as martyrs and to call for the Intifada to go worldwide. We have warships moving into the area to protect Israel. This is not good. And this is at home.

More protests are planned for around the country celebrating the people who murder Jews.

CNN FACES A BILLION DOLLAR JUDGEMENT FOR DEFAMING A MAN SAVING AFGHANIS Hooboy this is a story. CNN ran a hit piece on a guy named Zachary Young, who was charging companies to help get Afghans who were being hunted by the Taliban out of Afghanistan. As you can imagine, this is tricky business, justifying the high costs. CNN ran the piece calling Young a human trafficker and he sued and won. Not only did he win the defamation part, he won the malice part, which is almost NEVER proven. Now CNN is arguing they were right because Young violated Sharia Law. This is wild, read more here.

SOMEONE CHECK ON BEN AFFLECK You know I don't do celebrity news often but Ben Affleck's new look as he is headed for divorce from Jennifer Lopez is a stern warning for any man in his 50s going through a tough time. Just don't do it. Don't. You're welcome. Buy a sports car instead.

IF JD VANCE IS WEIRD, SO IS A LOT OF AMERICA And this column points out that the media parroting this narrative hates actual normal people so much they are trying to rebrand them as weird. He's actually pretty normal, with kids, a wife, and he does normal people things.

ADVERTISING JUST WENT NEXT LEVEL As Timothee Chalamet joined forces with Martin Scorcese to produce a 90 second film that...*checks notes*...sells perfume.

How much freaking perfume does Chanel have to sell to pay Chalamet $35 million bucks for this? I guess we'll find out. Read about this new frontier in advertising by clicking here.

WHAT TO DO IN DENVER TODAY I'm just saying that Donnie Osmond is at the Paramount tonight and if you see him between noon and three around town you need to hit the text line and help me get him on the show!

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW FORD AMPHITHEATRE If you like me are excited to check it out. Read it here.
