THERE IS SOMETHING MISSING FROM THE MAYOR'S NEW BOARD ON HOMELESSNESS I give Mayor Mike Johnston a lot of credit for jumping in hard on homelessness, but the more he does the bigger a hole I see in his plans. He just announced a new ten person "homeless resolution" team and though many on the board have a LOT of experience in this field, there is NO ONE who speaks specifically to addiction and mental illness. This is a huge oversight and one that is becoming glaring as the Mayor lays out big plans to tackle our growing issue. We will not solve this problem without similar bold ideas about how to help those who are on the street because they are addicted to drugs or alcohol or mentally ill or both. This is a big oversight in my view.
THIS AS HOMELESSNESS SPIKED 32% THIS YEAR The Road Home has been an epic failure. From the Denver Gazette:
The number of homeless people in metro Denver rose sharply even as local governments have committed significantly more and more resources to tackling the crisis.
It's almost like you get more of what you subsidize, amiright? Two counties saw a decline and they are two counties who have decided that allowing people to live on the streets or to beg is not okay.
DENVER CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE EMERGENCY DECLARATION As the Mayor's declaration would have expired this week without their support they passed a resolution extending the order until August. One City councilor wanted to hold off to show everyone that the City Council isn't "a rubber stamp for the Mayor" which goes to show how little some care about solving problems and care more about postering. There will be plenty of time for dissent, I'm sure.

ANOTHER DISGRUNTLED REPUBLICAN IN COLORADO Although I am no longer in the GOP, this Republican sent me a copy of a letter he sent to Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams and I think it's quite good:
Mr Williams,
I believe I have accurately summarized your playbook for the Republican Party in Colorado. Let me know what I'm missing, though I'm quite certain this is an accurate representation from what I've seen.
The Dave Williams Playbook:
1) Lose by 18 points (18!) in a congressional primary. Blame the fact that the election was unfair. Also attack the other republican candidate at every opportunity, going as far as claiming he is not Pro-Life with zero credibility to that claim.
2) Use your abrasive personality and influence within the state committee to win the state chair. Also attack other Republicans and assume bad motives if they don't support you.
3) Change the rules of primary elections to what you wish it had been so that you could have had a chance at winning. Make it so only Republicans within the very limited influence of the caucus system have any say, disenfranchising 99% of Republicans across the state, as well as the massive amount of independents that make up the majority of our state. Also attack any Republican who disagrees with this approach.
4) Realize that your proposal has no shot of winning even among the state committee where you have a lot of influence. Support a demonstrably undemocratic proposal to count any absent member as automatically voting in favor of any proposals. (Imagine if the left did something like this and any US resident who doesn't show up to the polls is automatically casting a vote in favor of the incumbent.) Nothing like your tried and true tactic of, "If you can't win, change the rules until you do."
5) Directly attack multiple sitting members of the Republican party as being "phony". Apparently the voters are too dumb to decide for themselves and need your help in knowing what people stand for.
6) Continue to divide the Republican party and bankrupt the party through your abrasive personality until we have no shot of winning even in areas where we should be locks. You'll inevitably tout this as progress as you're simply weeding out Rhinos (read: anyone who disagrees with you on anything).
Of course what you'll actually be doing is what you have been doing for years now, helping elect Democrats and deepening the shade of blue across the state. You claim that we're losing because the Republicans aren't red enough. Newsflash, we live in a deep blue state now and it is clear to see the reason is because of the infighting in our state party that you have helped orchestrate. Will you be satisfied when we have the perfect deep red candidate who you hand pick and who loses by 40 points because of everyone you've offended along the way with your no integrity moves?

HOW DECADES OF RECYCLING HARANGUING HAS BACKFIRED If you've been paying attention to the show you already know that recycling is a racket that doesn't do a fraction of what it promised it would. It has lead to a huge increase in plastic pollution, including a massive increase in microplastic pollution and the percentage of plastics that are actually recycled has actually dropped. This article is giving a glimpse of what's coming to replace the push for recycling and it will sound very familiar to those of us who grew up returning soda bottles for a dime. Now it's about reducing consumption of even recycled materials in the first place. I'm all for this.
