A well-known Italian and Mexican restaurant in Southeast Denver has shut its doors after 50 years of service, according to KDVR. Piccolo, which is located on South Monaco Parkway, served its final customers on Sunday, April 30.
On the last day of business, the owners wrote that there was a line forming outside the family-owned restaurant. Customers, community members, and employees gathered for one final get-together before the eatery closed for good.
The owners originally announced Piccolo's closing in late March:
"From our first day in business we have been committed to providing great food and great service at a great price. Throughout those years so many of you have become dear friends, loved ones, and supporters of Piccolo. It’s because of you we have been able to hold to that commitment and achieve our dream of being a neighborhood staple. There will never be enough words to thank you for that."
While the Piccolo owners didn't say why they're closing the longtime restaurant, they stressed that the decision was "not made hastily."
"The years of great memories made will remain forever, but our time in southeast Denver has come to an end," the statement said. "There doesn’t seem to be adequate words to sum up how we are feeling right now. If we tried, this statement would likely go on forever. So, for now, we will just say Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for being our support, our friends, our family."
Hundreds of Facebook users flooded the restaurant's page with love, memories, and well-wishes in the wake of its permanent closure.
No word on what will happen with the location, or if another business will replace it.
