03/03/23 Blog: What's Up at CPAC This Year

MY FRIEND MARY WALTER JOINS ME FROM CPAC I remember when I used to really want to go to this event and frankly I was surprised to find out this weekend. Am I alone in thinking the bloom is off the rose for this event? We'll find out from Mary Walter today at 12:30.

JUSTICE OPENS UP LAWSUITS AGAINST TRUMP And it seems that Capitol police may be looking to file a suit over January 6th. Just because the Justice Department says he can be sued does NOT mean plaintiffs will win, and they are going to have to find a judge or jury that believes the President's words incited the violence at the Capitol. Trump has timing on his side in that he was still speaking when the riot started, but this is going to be very interesting.

WE'VE GOT A THREE WAY RACE FOR MAYOR RIGHT NOW But we also have a LOT of Denverites who are undecided according to a new poll released yesterday that shows Lisa Calderon, Mike Johnston, and Kelly Brough in the lead right now but I'd hardly call 5% a great lead. A whopping 58% of voters say they don't know WHO they are going to vote for so I'm guessing the candidates who get those yard signs out do any advertising have a chance. Of the three that are barely leading, we have interviewed Mike Johnston and Kelly Brough and are working on Calderon. I'm just going to say that if a candidate does not appear on this show you should not vote for them. Period. Just saying.

IT'S NO SURPRISE THAT CRIME TOPS THE LIST OF DENVER CONCERNS Along with homelessness and affordable housing which I've already named the three legged stool of this Mayor's race. The only candidate in lock step and naming crime the top concern is Andy Rougeot. He's the one who wants to hire 400 cops to wrangle our crime rate under control. Read about the poll here, but there is nothing surprising in it.

GOOD NEW ON THE AWFUL FAIR WORK WEEK BILL The level headed member of the committee it was in killed it an 2-8 vote. Thank goodness. The Dems who voted against it wanted a carve out for restaurants and the sponsors decided they'd rather stand on principle than be effective and thank goodness for that. This is a big loss for the hard core progressive wing of the party and I fully expect it to come back again next year.

THE GOVERNOR IS TRYING TO LOWER HEALTHCARE COSTS And some of the things he wants to do may lower costs a bit but have unintended consequences yet to be seen. And I'm not sure Colorado can pass a bill that puts any sort of requirements on non-profit hospitals as Colorado has nothing to do with whether or not the federal government gives non-profit status in the first place. That being said, it would nice if anyone was talking about market forces or direct primary care like Pinnacle Advanced Primary Care as ways to make healthcare cheaper. They are already doing it. It's already happening. But they ignore what works for more government.

GOOD NEWS IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY A HOME RIGHT NOW The Denver market has NOT come roaring back and median home price DROPPED by 5.7% in February after a very small uptick in January. Closing are up, meaning there are more homes on the market. The dip is not something to panic about unless you're trying to sell a home you bought a year ago. Our increases have been so insane they need to come back down to earth a bit.

DEMOCRATS SIDE WITH TRIAL LAWYERS AND SHUT DOWN HIKING TRAILS IN COLORADO Many of the trails we enjoy hiking on in Colorado are on private property. Until recently property owners enjoyed a level of protection against liability from people getting hurt because of a 1977 law designed to do that. Now a new verdict that gave a mountain biker $7.3 million after he crashed on a washed out trail on Air Force Academy property has property owners rightfully worried. Rep. Mark Baisley ran a bill that would have given those land owners greater protection and 25 organizations supported it along with landowners who allow the public onto their property to hike. Trial lawyers were the ONLY ones opposing it and the Democrats killed it. This means private property owners are going to shut down popular trails instead of facing the potential for a massive lawsuit. My dad was a trial lawyer but he believed very strongly in private property rights. These lawyers are ruining it for everyone.

FORD WANTS TO TURN OFF YOUR AC IF YOU MISS A CAR PAYMENT This is the future and it's coming via Ford. Ford has applied for a patent that would allow them to control certain features in your car on their demand. Meaning if you missed car payment they could shut off your ac, or shut off your radio or even lock your doors. They wouldn't need to repossess it, they can just make it unusable. I don't think I want a car with this feature and will be asking about when I buy my next car. And that's from someone who hasn't missed a car payment in 20 years.

HEY LOOK, AN ALTERNATIVE POST CREDIT SCENE FROM IRONMAN! This was just released and I like it. Of course it was perhaps going to be at the end of Ironman back in 2008 but here we are.

THREE THINGS ABOUT RAISING DAUGHTERS These are fairly accurate.

CHEYENNE DAYS HAS A GREAT LINEUP THIS YEAR As they always do. Find the lineup here, and go up there and smell the freedom while you're at it.

ONE CALIFORNIA CITY HAS SOLVED ITS HOMELESS ISSUE By simply refusing to allow encampments and forcing homeless people to get help. The Mayor, who happens to be a Republican, says the state policies are exacerbating the problem so he went a different route. Watch the Mayor discuss how Coronado, California has done it.

There are a few Denver Mayor candidates saying this same thing. Give them a look.

WHICH KIND OF DRIVER ARE YOU? I am the first type, I don't live on the edge anymore as I've run out of gas too many times in my life in very embarrassing situations.

THE FAKE TRANS TEACHER WHO WEARS GIANT FAKE BOOBS IN ON LEAVE Is he on leave for wearing the giant fake boobs with protruding nipples as he taught shop class to high school kids? No. He's on leave because he was caught NOT wearing them and dressed like a man. We've entered Crazy Town and all the exits are closed.

SO ARE WE GIVING RUSSIANS AT THE BORDER ASYLUM NOW? This is going to be interesting. About 5,000 Russians have made their way to Mexico to walk over and ask for asylum in the United States. These are not poor people from Latin America who "just want a better life" they are Russians with money who don't want to fight or be forced to fight in Ukraine. So what is Joe going to do with this mess at the border he created now that our arch enemies are trying to take advantage of his lax policies?

IS ASKING PEOPLE TO PICK YOU UP AT THE AIRPORT WRONG? This tweeter says yes and I say they are a selfish bastard. If someone is coming to see me, I'm going to pick them up. If they are in town for work, they can rent a car. But this is just rude and selfish. And I say this as someone who lives about 45 minutes from our airport. Rude.
