The Broncos didn’t rush into free agency the way other teams like The Jaguars and The Chargers did, but when General Manager George Paton took his 1st big swing Monday, a little less than 12 hours after the legal tampering period began, he landed a big fish, size-wise. Denver has agreed to terms with 6-foot, 304-pound Defensive Lineman, D.J. Jones.
The deal is reportedly worth $30 Million over 3 years, with $20 Million fully guaranteed.
Jones, who’s started 46 games in San Francisco, and appeared in 61, has amassed 126 tackles and 7 sacks. He becomes an obvious replacement for Shelby Harris who was part of the trade to acquire Russell Wilson. 2021 was Jones most productive season to date, as he started all 17 games, after starting 14 in 2020. Last year, the former 6th-round pick from Ole Miss racked up a career high 56 tackles.
The Broncos still need to address needs at outside linebacker and right tackle, as well as inside linebacker and cornerback. They still have plenty of cap room, and a number of irons in the fire, including luring linebacker Josey Jewell back before he can hit free agency when the new league year begins Wednesday afternoon, and all of these moves can become official.
