CONGRATS TO THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS! You finally got one a few years after your first one. Fifty years to be exact. I know lifelong Broncos fans hate KC and I totally get it, but I'm glad they won. Now it will be even more impressive when we beat them twice next year!
ABOUT THAT HALF TIME SHOW i have to tell you, I was actually bored by the half time show. I am not a huge fan of either artist, and the gyrations and pole dancing did nothing for me. I guess a lot of people loved it, a lot of people didn't think it was family friendly and I was just bored. So there you go. I should add that in previous years, like when Lady Gaga performed, I went into it not knowing/loving the artist but still enjoyed the show.
WHAT COMMERCIALS WON THE DAY YESTERDAY? According to USA Today, the Bill Murray Groundhog Day spot for Jeep did, but the Jason Momoa spot actually made me burst out laughing. Check out the whole list here!
I DIDN'T THINK THE GAME WAS THAT BORING Apparently one guy was not amused by the game and fell asleep AT THE SUPER BOWL. A reporter caught it on tape and made the man instantly famous. Make that infamous.
WE'RE HEADED TO A LITTLE ICE AGE! At least according to those hacks at NASA who say that the sun is entering a period of low expected activity which is going to correlate to lower temperatures. Even though they've been telling us forever that the SUN DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. We'll see how this turns out.
HOW DO WE STACK UP TO OUR WORLD RIVALS? I would have not thought to stack the US up against Iran, Russia and China for a compare and contrast, but this author did. As we bemoan the loss of American standing, what are we really bemoaning? Read this and chin up!
WANT TO KNOW THE SECRET OF SECRET MILLIONAIRES? Dave Ramsey preaches.
RTD IS A MESS BUT STATE OVERSIGHT ISN'T THE ANSWER And Joshua Sharf writes about the hot mess that the Regional Transportation District (RTD) is and what a new state bill would do to put MORE taxpayer money at stake to prop up the wildly expensive and utterly underused light rail while trying to figure out how to run buses to where they don't run now in the hopes someone will start riding them after years of declining ridership. Spoiler alert: it's going to cost all of us more.
COLORADO LEGISLATORS ARE TRYING TO CAP SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION DONATIONS And unless and until they add Teacher's Unions to the list of capped donations this is a non-starter for me. As the bill is being considered, special committees or PACs would NOT be capped. This is ridiculous and must be called what it is, which is a cap on non-union, parent donations to people who may not be union stooges.
DEMOCRATS HAVE A BERNIE SANDERS PROBLEM And this is exactly why I hope Bernie can pull this off in spite of Bloomberg's transparent attempts to buy his way onto the ballot. Bernie is extremely beatable. Bloomberg is a much more formidable opponent.
SHOULD WE CREATE A "GUN COURT" FOR TEENS IN DENVER? This is being proposed as an alternative to just throwing teenagers into the criminal justice system where they may spend the rest of their adult lives. I'm not sure I have enough details about WHAT sort of gun crimes would land a teen in this court, but if the crime is a violent attack on someone else, I'm not down with that. If it's a fourteen year old brandishing a weapon to build his cred, I would be okay with a different option that may help that stupid teenager make better choices in the future.
COLLEGE STUDENTS DEMAND CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION AND DON'T LIKE THE ACTION SUGGESTED Students attending Oxford College in the UK want to do SOMETHING about climate change, so they made a demand that the college divest any investments from fossil fuels. The response was so...elegant and perfect. Check this:
Two students at St John’s College wrote to Andrew Parker, the principal bursar, this week requesting a meeting to discuss the protesters’ demands, which are that the college “declares a climate emergency and immediately divests from fossil fuels”. They say that the college, the richest in Oxford, has £8 million of its £551 million endowment fund invested in BP and Shell.
Professor Parker responded with a provocative offer. “I am not able to arrange any divestment at short notice,” he wrote. “But I can arrange for the gas central heating in college to be switched off with immediate effect. Please let me know if you support this proposal.”
It get even better when you read the response from the young lad who started this whole protest in the first place:
Fergus Green, the organiser of the wider protest, who is studying for a master’s degree in physics and philosophy at Balliol College, said: “This is an inappropriate and flippant response by the bursar to what we were hoping would be a mature discussion. It’s January and it would be borderline dangerous to switch off the central heating.”
This is my favorite story of the year so far. Read the whole thing here.
THE RATINGS ARE IN FOR THE IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS And the big three networks had what can only be described as anemic viewing which dropped as the week went on. But I'm sure this is not a sign of how little Americans care about these hearings. I'm sure.
NO, YOUR RAZOR DOESN'T NEED A GENDER This article about personal products being marketed as unisex now is just so...unneeded. I have used men's razors for years because they are cheaper than women's razors, and Chuck and I use the same soaps and moisturizers and lotions already. It just seems so self consciously woke and annoying.
IF YOU TAKE ON A SUPER HARD CHALLENGE, MAYBE KNOW HOW TO DO IT FIRST?
THIS IS PRETTY MUCH WHY I DON'T SKI Because this is pretty much what it would look like.
